Knoxville TN Location People Photography Workshop

2010 Location People
October 12 - 17, 2010
(Tuesday at 4:00 pm – Sunday at 5:00 pm)
Knoxville, TN
Instructor: Bryan Allen
Tuition: $1,295
Deposit: $300
This workshop, held in Knoxville, Tennessee, combines the two Location People workshops from last year into one bigger, better workshop this year! By popular demand, we’ve added a full day to the agenda to allow more time for field exercises and more time to cover workflow, post processing, and retouching images after capture. Image review and critique will be central to the learning process.
This workshop is designed to dramatically improve the skill sets required to effectively photograph people. With people as the primary subject matter, the workshop will explore lighting in a detailed but down-to-earth manner. We will provide demonstrations and hands on exercises covering a variety of lighting setups for location-based and lifestyle portraiture. We will cover methods to achieve desired lighting effects by using natural/ambient light, on and off camera flash systems, studio strobes, and mixed-source lighting. We will also cover light modification tools and techniques. Participants will work with both models and everyday people to improve their technical abilities and explore techniques to increase their overall comfort level and ability to better connect with human subjects. We will cover photographing people in both controlled (studio and interior) and uncontrolled (street and location-based) settings. Whether you want to simply improve your images of friends and family, or seriously explore portraiture and advance lighting techniques, this workshop is for you. We will provide both individual and group exercises designed for all skill and experience levels and the individual goals of the participants. Field exercises build in complexity throughout the workshop and culminate in a “real world” production.
With the Fall colors of East Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park as our backdrop we will photograph people at locations varying from historic interiors to urban cityscapes to mountain and lake landscapes. One day will be spent shooting on location on beautiful Norris Lake with and elegant dinner hosted by Bryan and his wife at their home on the lake. We will continue to work with both models and everyday people but will introduce stylists and make-up artists into the production mix. This workshop will also build your interpersonal skills and help you develop the “soft-skill” processes required to effectively work with human subjects and manage an overall shoot.

Testimonials
"I was hoping that attending the Location People workshop would provide me with a solid understanding of basic lighting. I did not expect that I would learn that and much more. Bryan brings an enthusiasm and creativity that are contagious. He teaches you the technical aspects of lighting but also puts it into the context of developing a creative process for yourself that pushes your photography to another level. He gives you the confidence to make the lighting work for you to support your ideas. If you want to really understand lighting and what it can do for your photography then this is the exact workshop for you.” Kate, Location Portraiture 2008.
"The entire workshop was way beyond what I had expected--total immersion in a subject; taught by an extremely talented and knowledgeable guy; hands-on experience with top-notch gear . . . it was a great and inspiring workshop. – Steve M., Location Portraiture, 2009.
"Bryan's enthusiasm kept everyone keyed up. His teaching style is great, very informative and relaxed, and he obviously enjoys teaching, too. I liked that he started with the basics and built upon that each day and for each assignment. – Flo D, Location Portraiture, 2009.

The closest airport to Knoxville is the Knoxville McGee Tyson Airport (TYS). The airport is approximately 15 minutes from downtown Knoxville. There is taxi service and there are rental cars available at this airport. Taxi fare to downtown Knoxville where our hotel is located is approximately $30.00.
