"Self Critique" by Craig Tanner

Posted: July 22nd, 2009 @ 12:01am

In today’s Daily Critique Craig takes a critical look at his own work and talks about the idea of approach to image design as it relates to his people photography:
- how the subject matter itself has an effect on approach and process
- when we start to interact with people how we are being behind the camera becomes very important
- taking a long view of the process of people photography and making the concept of community a big part of your work
- keeping color simple from the beginning
- working far to near
- shooting 10 to 20 shots and then making a change to camera angle, subject distance, lens choice or all of the above
- giving frequent breaks to your portrait subjects and continuing to shoot in the breaks
- when shooting full body shots looking for formally symmetrical backgrounds that can repeat the formal symmetry of the human form
