- complimentary color pairs

- juxtaposition of different qualities of line and shape

- soft side light for simple, patterned subjects

- using curves and grouped layers to darken

- leaving some things for the imagination of the viewer, especially if they are heavily implied, mature subjects that have the potential to create design imbalances
