| DOB: 20 Feb 2011 | February 20, 2011 @ 12:54pm | That's Date Of Birth. These shots aren't really of pets, but neither are they of wildlife. Since we don't have a domestic livestock category, I've chosen to post them here. The quality isn't great--black cattle on a pre-dawn pasture need a lot of exposure pushing with Photoshop to show any detail.
I was giving my dog her Sunday morning run in the pasture today. The cattle have been turned out into the pasture for the calving season. I saw this cow from a distance while she was nosing and licking a little black, motionless lump. "Uh, oh," I thought--a stillbirth. But as I got closer, I saw the twitch of an ear from the lump. Still, it could have been the wind. With only a zoom lens with a max of 135mm, I still couldn't see very well, and I edged closer.

Hoo-rah! After some more minutes, the calf staggered to its feet. It was alive after all. Something I couldn't see at the time, but which shows up in this enlargement, is the pink umbilical cord still hanging down from the calf's belly.

| February 20, 2011 @ 9:29pm | The miracle of birth, what a heartwarming story in a cold, hostile environment. I'm glad the calf and mother made it. The way you wrote the story is well done and brings the pictures to life. Thank you for sharing.
Janet

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W. |

| February 21, 2011 @ 3:59pm | | I was expecting to see baby spiders when I opened this. Love the story with the images. I have to admit I was feeling a sense of dread as I read into it almost holding my breath waiting for the end. What an odd time of year for them to calve. I always thought it would be closer to spring than mid-winter. |

Thanks, Marianne. Though I've been known to keep a captive spider now and then, and though I've got a vial full of eggs in my refrigerator at the moment, I really can't think of them as pets. I won't be posting them in the Pets category.
Around here, the calves seem to be mostly born from February through April, which sometimes means their entry into the world starts by being dropped into a snowdrift. A rather rude introduction to the world.
