| TJ's Article on Big Bend in Int'l. Phot. Mag. | January 7, 2009 @ 9:06am | I’m greatly pleased to announce that I’ve had an article published in the premier issue of International Photographer Magazine (edited and published by Brian Patterson). The article spans 16 pages and includes 11 of my photos taken in Big Bend National Park. There’s also a short write-up by me that focuses on my shooting style and techniques. The cover photo is also mine.

IP Magazine is offered as a print-on-demand publication. It’s roughly twice as expensive as specialty photography magazines you see in bookstores (e.g. Aperture, Lenswork). However, being offered as print-on-demand insures that no waste occurs. It’s a neat concept.
In fact, Lenswork Publishing has recently pulled their magazine from bookstores and it’s only available via subscription, effectively print-on-demand (although it’s only issued bi-monthly). The reason is that typical magazines offered in stores often go to waste when they are not purchased. They end up getting thrown out (or hopefully put into a recycle bin).
Anyway, sorry for the digression. I hope you enjoy my article! I’m very pleased to have photos from my Big Bend project (http://www.texbrick.com/photo/proj_big_bend/index.html) featured in a publication.

| January 7, 2009 @ 6:35pm | How thrilling! I see many of your beautiful images are double-page spreads, and that you didn't have to write a huge amount of copy. (That, along with pre-press preparation, would be awfully daunting for me and I'd love to hear more about the process.)

The process was fairly simple for me. I just submitted images that were chosen by the editor, Brian Patterson, after he searched my website. He asked me to write something, but wasn't terribly specific about it (other than to say he wanted to focus on shooting style and techniques). I wrote a smallish article, and he was happy with it. He did make a few small changes.
He put the whole thing together - laying out the photos and text as he wanted. I didn't get to do much else other than see a proof before it was published.
