Whenever I see images as lovely as hers, I think I just ought to hang up my camera! These are amazing. She has quite an eye for subject matter and composition.

I agree with you, Flo. Thanks for the link. It is a very enjoyable and inspiring gallery to look at.

Some very interesting photography that gets me to thinking I need to take more notice.

There are some great photos there. But nothing that I don't think any of us here couldn't do.

Bodak brings up a great point. Take time to notice. Then take time to set up the scene. I see too many photos (of course not all) posted here where the photographer says "I ran across this scene and took a snap." Sorry, but that usually shows in the image. It is "just a snap" and the photographer has not put themselves into it.

This should be inspiration to do more, not to give up. You have the talent. You have the eye. You can do it!

John, I may have the talent. But no matter how much time I take to set up, etc, I usually am not satisfied with the results. So I'm thinking that I don't have the "eye."

I still can't get over Craig's choice of one of the portraits I took in Savannah of the gal in the yellow dress that he used for a DC. To my eye, it is a so-so image. Even after Craig got through with it, I still think it's so-so, but not as much so-so as before.

It's the light quality and direction that make Diane Varner's images stand out. I rarely can get that same - well, cleanness, I guess is the word I'm hunting for. Maybe she's just a better post processor than I am? I'd love to take a workshop with her, if she does such.

Edit: Well, I guess it's the fact that she shoots raw and I don't, and that she is really a much better post processor than I am!

Flo,

I'm very much like you in as much as that I am usually not satisfied with the results.
If we were all honest I'd guess at saying that there are a lot of us out there that feel the same way...

Now to go and read some of what you have linked to.

I don't remember how I discovered her work a little while back, but fell in love with it and immediately added "Daily Walks" to my RSS feed. The most recent, titled "Uphill", is sheer delight. Thanks, Flo, for reminding me to keep up with her work.

One thing which strikes me is that, despite the title of her 'blog, she only posts one image every week or two. So while I imagine she's constantly shooting (and processing), it's only her very best work that we see.

I'm sure she throws a bunch into the trash -- or at least into a holding bin, never to see the light of day. Smile
