I am posting two images from my files as a way to alert all of you who can do so to witness the annular solar eclipse on May 20. Draw a line from Crescent City, California, through Albuquerque, NM, and on to Lubbock, TX. Everyone within a 100-mile radius of this line will experience the noteworthy event. Redwoods NP, Lassen National Park, Zion NP, Canyon de Chelly NM, Petroglyph NM, and Glen Canyon NRA will all have Ranger-led programs.

Solar eclipses re-occur at 18-year periods, and this one will be a "cousin" of the one of May 10, 1994, which I photographed from near Roswell, NM. Incidentally, the annual rainfall at Roswell is 13 inches, and on eclipse day they had over 1 inch of rain. The photo was taken through a natural filter of clouds; we never saw annularity.

The photo of January 4, 1992, was taken from San Onofre State Beach in northern San Diego County, California, at sunset.

See http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEsearch/SEsearchmap.php?Ecl=20120520 for exact times and other technical data.

Thanks, Flo.

How many think they are experienced simply because they've grown old!

I love both images. But what caused the vertical streaks in the 2nd? A scanner?

I hope you'll be able to view and photograph the May 20 eclipse. I don't live where it'll be visible.

Flo: Yes, both images were scanned from prints that hang on my wall along with one of the total eclipse from Hawaii in 1991. Streaks might well have come from trying to clean the scanner or the picture glass.

Total and annular solar eclipses are spectacular events, and you must see the next total eclipse within the United States, which will be on August 21, 2017. Draw a line from Columbia, Missouri, through Columbia, South Carolina, and plan to be on that line or within 50 miles north or south of it.

We decided not to drive 5 hours to the eclipse path, so here is a composite of views from our home in Moraga, California. Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18, 504mm (35 mm equivalent), f/8, 1/250 sec., optical quality solar filter.

Beautiful! Thank you soooo much from an East Coaster who didn't get to travel to see this wonderful event.

Killersnowman:

The first frame of the series on the May 20 eclipse was slightly out of focus.
