I have always had trouble hanging around the camera waiting for lightning to happen when a storm goes by I finally purchased a lightning sensor for the camera and just put it o the camera turned on the camera and walked away. After it snapped 194 images I got one with 3 strikes. Great fun.

HI Wes, really happy to see you play with the new gadget. What a cool piece of equipment. Nice lightning capture here.

I am confused about one thing though….I thought the whole point of the gadget was to trigger the shutter when lightning is detected. So why the need to shoot 194 images to capture this? Can you please help me understand.

Anyway, I have always enjoyed the majestic showmanship of nature and am pleased to see you capture it. I bet you wish for more stormy days, now that you are well equipped to capture it.
Thanks for sharing

It hard to explain but I will try. As the storm goes by, there are bright lightning above the clouds that don't make the nice streaks. These bright lights also trigger the camera to shoot. So most of the shots were taken because of those soft bright flashes. There isn't a way to set the gadget up to just catch the streaky varieties of lightning.

Thanks for looking.

Holy moly, I love this! The gadget and the image.

Storm chasing could be very fun, in protected venues.Smile

(It's the "walk away" part I especially like.)

Thanks April I love storms and have wanted to capture lightning for a long time. It has always been such an effort until now.

Wes, Is this gadget equivalent to a remote flash trigger when your main flash goes off? But perhaps more sensitive and it triggers your shutter? Nice work.

Thank, Michael. This gadget is called Lightning Shutter Trigger. It fits into the flash shoe and attached by way of the nine pin plug into the camera. When there is lightning, the trigger is immediately activated and the picture is taken. I stood there for a while and listened to the camera firing, even when just bright diffuse lightning was happening. The nice part is that I no longer have to guess when to set up the camera to fire.

That is some capture, wow. I too like the "walk away" part. Much as I like watching a storm I'm never comfortable standing near a window during one. This shot really shows the power of lightning strikes and scary to think it's not just one bolt.

Thank you, Marianne. I am new at this so hopefully will learn more along the way. Now, all I need are ore storms. Since spring has sprung, this might not be a problem.

I sometimes hear people dismissively say, "It's not the camera that makes the picture, it's the photographer." But there are some situations where there's no substitute for having the right gear. Congratulations on your new accessory, Wes. I hope you have a lot of fun with it in the coming months.

Wes, you got some spectacular results. You should join the Storm Chasers, who shoot for The Weather Channel!

You are so right, Rick. In this case there was certainly no work on my part, except setting up the camera and aiming it at the sky.

Thanks you Flo. Not quite ready to join another group, Flo. Nor am I going to get in the car and run around the country chasing storms. I love to watch storms from where ever I happen to be at the moment. Safe, of course.
