"My goodness, Grandma - what loooong legs you have! EEEK!" exclaims the Little Red Riding Hood of the ant world.

This is a different kind of fly, with those long legs! Wes, it must have been so busy eating that it didn't mind you getting so close! Remarkable!

Did you use extension tubes?

Thanks, Usha and Flo. I did not use an extension tube, Flo but I will start doing that on the next trip to the garden. I notice that RickT does use extension tubes but they have always been difficult for me for some reason. I fell like I need the freedom of hand holding when chasing critters so that would mean taking the lens off the extension tube and then putting it back on when using the tripod. This was handheld so that I could move around and snap different POV's. Many, Many shots were taken. The only part of the insect that was moving was the mandibles as it chewed on its prey.

Not exactly Audrey Hepburn there. More like George Peppard in his A-Team days. Wes, I just tried a quick curves and brightness adjustment aimed mostly to darken the background. It really makes the iridescent colors of the robber fly pop, and shows what a dramatic shot you've really captured here. I'll send it to you.

I just got your Email, Rick. Thanks a lot for the suggestions and for showing me another version of this image. Your changes have made some very important changes that I had not considered at all. I guess I was just too thrilled to have captured this shotSmile .

Rick, is this a female robber fly? Is that an ovipositor on its rear end?

Ssure looks like something else to me, Flo. Do flies poop as they eat? Could be some kind of oral-anal reflex.

I don't know, Flo. I tend to regard flies mainly as spider food, and don't know as much about them as I should.

I Googled, but didn't have any luck finding female flies' ovipositors that look like the crooked thing at the end of this fly's abdomen. Most photos of fly ovipositors show them as being very slender, long and flexible needle-like things that can be retracted.

But then I discovered this pdf with absolutely outstanding photos of nothing butt certain female flies' ovipositors! Talk about super duper macro shots!

Great article, Flo. They used a scanning electron microscope which is way out of workflow these days. This means that their samples were captured and fixed in order to examine them. The pictures are wonderful.

Thank you.

Flo, you sly dog, you! Slipping that pun right past us.

Echoing Wes, if I ever win the lottery an SEM is on my shopping list.

Why, thank you, Rick! That's why the double tt, lol.

I can imagine you happily peering through one of those SEMs observing all the even tinier details on your spiders than you can see now!
