Fledging Great Horned OwlsJune 12, 2012 @ 10:12am

I have been lucky to find the nesting place of a pair of Great Horned Owls near my home. These two were waiting on the top of the ridge above the nest for mom and dad to bring dinner home.

Fantastic capture, Melani. How far away were you from these two beauties and what lens did you use? Did you have to do much post processing?

I was about 20 to 30 feet from them. The nest is in a hole in a cliff and I was above watching a fencpost that had a lot of white wash on it. I turned around and was surprised to see one of the owls watching me from a rock behind me. I sat down and slowly set up my tripod so it was facing that way keeping the owl in my peripheral vision. I was really pleased when a second one joined the first on the rock several minutes later. I was using a 200 to 500 zoom lense on a 5D mark 2 camera. I hope I can get more pictures of them when they have all thier adult feathers, but before they leave the nest area. I had to do a little lightening in post. These guys are usually only out when it starts to get dark. Thanks for your comments.

The darkness really adds to the evocative atmosphere of this shot. I hope you get more opportunities, but it will be a stretch to top this shot.

I just love this image. It's amazing!

As RickT noted, the darkness really speaks to me of owls in their natural habitat. And oh, their beauty...

The patterns in their feathers and harmony with colors in the lichen on the rock -- even the way their shapes build upon the shapes of the rock.

Not to mention their different expressions, with such character.

Just glorious.

Thanks April. It's not often that the elements in a photo line up just right for us like the ones in this picture did. I'm just gratefull that I've had the time to learn how to take advantage of it when it does and that I had the lense and camera that could do justice to it.
