HI Sam,

This is an amazing moment and definitely makes this shot. You've captured the expressions on the faces of the rider and her horse at such an intense moment as they turn around the barrel.

The colors also add to this image -- the red and white of the barrel, the blue of her chaps, the yellow/orange of her shirt, and even the greens shirts of the spectators help add depth to this image.

The depth of field that you chose is great. Horse and rider are sharp. The background is soft but with enough detail that we know what is there.

The only thing that pulls me away a bit is the white sign in the background. And to even say that is picky because of the great moment you caught and the other aspects of the image.

Very nice work in such a fast-paced environment.

Ditto what Marti said. Wou might try darkening that sign a bit. How horse and rider manage to retain their control over gravity is beyond me, when I see a still shot like this. The tension it creates in my own muscles when I see this image is almost as great as it'd be if I'd been there. Same goes for motorcycle riders rounding sharp curves.

This gal looks to be in her teens. How about some back story?

Thank you, Marti and Flo. You are right about the white sign. I did darken the background but should probably remove it all together. This girl was about 19 or 20 yrs. of age. She was one of the faster riders I saw that day. This was a regional competition that included many different levels of amateur and pro with money awarded to the best times. What struck me was how meticulously most of these riders dressed for the competition: shirts, pants, boots, and hats (that frequently flew off) were brightly colored and adorned. Even their horses wore stylish after-race wear as is evidenced by this pic:

I love rodeos. The barrel racer is a great shot. I also like the shot of the "dressed up" horse.

LOL, we have a dalmation-horse hybrid!!! I've never seen a horse with tail color like that, either.

Great action shot, Sam. I love the expression on the rider's face.
