Please say a prayer for MartiMarch 5, 2009 @ 10:53am

Hi Everybody,

If you read this please remember Marti in your prayers and thoughts.

Marti's dog and dear friend Riley was killed this morning.

Anyone that has ever had a pet knows the heartbreak of losing an animal companion.

Without Marti there would be no TME. She has supported this community tirelessly. She needs your support today and in the near future as she grieves the loss of her friend.

Thanking you in advance for any positive energy you can send her way......Craig

I'm so sorry Marti. It is tough to lose a friend in any manner, but accidents are always worse because of the suddeness. All of us that have loved a special dog know what you are feeling.

Hi everyone,

Thank you so very very much for your thoughts and prayers. They mean so very much. Riley was my best friend -- a very intuitive and sensitive one of God's creatures. To have him taken away in a flash is such a jolt.

Thank you to Craig, my dear dear friend, who dropped everything and came across town to be here with me. That meant all the world to me today.

This is a picture I took of my Riley angel boy a couple of years ago, as he was sleeping in his favorite place -- on the back of the sofa. I am going to miss him so very very much.

All of your hugs, phone calls, thoughts and prayers mean so very much to me.

Marti, I am so sorry for your loss! This helped me when I lost dear Barney:

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Hi Murry,

Thank you for posting this. I know this poem so well as it has provided comfort to me over the many years when my dogs have gone on to the Bridge before me. I really appreciate you providing it for me again.

I guess I'm still in a bit of shock because it all seems so unreal yet. Riley is the first dog I've lost to an accident in over 25 years. I've been so fortunate to have all of my other canine friends live with me until old age took them home.

Thank you so much for this.

Marti,

I can only imagine what you are going through right now as I myself am a BIG dog lover, and have had mine since he was 6 weeks old. He is now going on 9 years old this year and I know my days are getting close to numbered. I don't know how I am going to feel when his time comes, but I do know that he will leave this world knowing that I loved him! Unfortunaltely this is a part of owning a pet...but I would much rather go through this part than to never have any pets at all. The memories cannot be replaced. My thoughts and prayers are with you!

Marti,

I am so very sorry for your loss, and am typing through tears of empathy.

Riley looks a glorious dog, and I know you will miss him terribly. Please try to remember that he absolutely knew how very much you loved him, and hold on to the joys you shared together.

It is so hard that the depth of our pain upon loss is also a measure of shared love.

In sympathy, and with wishes for peace. My thoughts are with you.

Poem for Marti and RileyMarch 5, 2009 @ 8:29pm
This was sent to me by my sister-in-law when she had to put her friend to sleep. Thought it might help:

Last Night

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.

I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,

"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,

You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.

I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.

I want to re-assure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.

I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said " it's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.

I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.

To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...

In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning

and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,

I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.

Be patient, live your journey out...then come home to be with me.

Wes

You have my sympathy for your loss. It is hard to lose such great non-judgmental, accepting companions.

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W.

Hi, Marti - my sympathies are with you. Riley looks like a very beautiful dog and I'm sure you'll miss him terribly. I do believe, however, that he'll be waiting for you when you must take your own trek across the bridge. I still miss every one of our dogs we have lost to illness or old age.

Sending you a big warm hugs whenever you need any.

Love & Blessings,
Flo

We can learn a lot from animals who love us unconditionally for who we are, not what we look like or do ... they only see our heart and their love is true.

My heart goes out to you for your loss...

Hi Everyone,

After two days, the earth under my feet has stopped shaking quite so violently and the shaking in my body has begun to settle down a bit. My heart is still broken, but that will heal with time.

I so very very much appreciate all of the thoughts and poems posted in this thread, and the phone calls and individual messages from members of this wonderful community. Usha, being the ever "doing" person, even visited the local animal shelter in her area and started a project to raise money for the shelter and she and several friends signed up for service projects at the shelter. Riley would be so appreciative of this.

Riley was an emotionally damaged rescue youngster when he came to live with me 9 years ago. Working together, he became my love-everyone-one-he-met, velcro-boy -- never far from me. All the kids in the neighborhood knew him and played with him. I'm sure that he is somewhere smiling at them and all of you with that silly American Eskimo grin of his.

Riley boy, thank you so much for sharing 9 of your 10 years with me. I was expecting at least 5 more, but I'm so grateful for the 9.

To all of you, thank you again for all of your support.

With love -- Marti

My deepest sympathy pours out to you.
I only have to place myself in your position and I feel a lump that grows larger the longer I stay.

Please be assured that Riley is alive and full of youthful vigor.
He awaits in another space to which we all return...

Thank You ALL AGAIN!!March 9, 2009 @ 9:05am
Hello everyone,

Thank you all again and again for the messages you've posted here in the last few days. They all mean so very much to me. Stephen, your message came in while I was still up in the wee hours of the morning and I so appreciate it.

When Riley first came to live with me, a good friend of mine had a poem done up for me in calligraphy with a painting of Riley on it. It still hangs in my house and goes like this:

Things We Can Learn From A Dog

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps and stretch before rising.
Run, romp and play daily;
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you are not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout --- run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Riley was the epitome of this attitude about life.

My neighbor, during this sad time, also sent the following story that I believe sums up the life of our canine companions:

A Dog's Purpose
(from a 6-year old).

"Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.  The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.  I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure.  They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.  Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.  We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.  Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him.  What came out of his mouth next stunned me.  I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'"

Go hug your dogs and other animal companions today. Let then know just how much joy they bring into your life -- just as they let you know.

Thank you to you all.

What a beautiful boy. I love my Alaskan boy too (Leximo the Malamute Eskimo). A sweet sounding song about eskimo friends written and sung by Damien Rice - one of my favorites. To Riley:

Eskimo
Tiredness fuels empty thoughts
I find myself disposed
Brightness fills empty space
In Search of inspiration
Harder now with higher speed
Washing in on top of me
So I look to my eskimo friend
I look to my eskimo friend
when I'm down, down, down.

Rain it wets muddy roads
I find myself exposed
Tapping doors, but irritate
In search of destination
Harder now with higher speed
Washing in on top of me
So I look to my eskimo friend
I look to my eskimo friend
when I'm down, down, down.

Hi Tina,

Thank you so very much for the beautiful lyrics!! Yes, I did "look to my Eskimo (Dog) friend" when I needed inspiration or felt exposed to the world. He was great at filling those "empty thoughts" and longing for destination. I still miss him terribly.

I felt so fortunate to be able to be there with him when I realized that he was not going to recover from his injuries (broken back and severed spinal cord) and to be able to go part of the way with him to his next adventure. He was so alert to the end.

Thank you again for these lyrics. I'd not heard them before but will cherish them in Riley's memory.

Thank you for being in Savannah on the Lensbaby workshop with us. It was great fun and was really great getting to know you.

Marti,

When I met you in Savannah, I didn't realize that you'd recently lost your friend. I wish I'd known we would've had a lot to talk (or cry) about. I lost an Eskie--Mabel--last year.

Riley was beautiful. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hi Sandy,

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. Yes, I'd have loved to talk to another person who was owned by an Eskie! They are special dogs and I'm sure your Mable was every bit as special as my Riley --- and all the other canines who choose to share their lives with us.

It's tough to loose such wonderful companions -- as Craig and other friends who've recently lost them to accidents or, if they are lucky, to old age, know. It hurts no less that they live out the full extent of their lives when they choose to leave us.

Here's to dogs who choose us!! How lucky we are that they come our way. Open Arms
