Since it's still winter outside (16F tonight), the early hatchers have come indoors. This tiny (head + abdomen = 2.5 mm) crab spider, tentatively a Philodromid, was running across my table. Since it was too spunky to photograph, I caught it and let it chill for awhile in the refrigerator. Then I dumped it out on this plastic plate for a few shots. It doesn't take long for something so small to regain enough heat for mobility--a couple of quick shots and it was off to the races again.

Rick, your spider shots are amazing. How you can get such sharp focus with such tiny subjects is beyond me! If it hadn't been scurrying across your table, you probably wouldn't have noticed it. The plate color goes nicely with the spider's color.

With this shot, Rick, it is difficult to know just how big it might, except by your telling us. They are such cute little things, aren't they? Of course, a lot of people would disagree with that comment, I am sure.

Thanks for the comments, Flo and Wes. Flo, that macro lens of mine gets beyond confused when trying to autofocus on such small targets, so I switch to manual focus, set it at closest range, and then wobble in and out with each breath and heartbeat, waiting for a convergence of events to squeeze off a single shot. Breathe and repeat. This is handheld, but my supporting hand is resting on a solid object (in this case, a table). I've tried the same approach with "motorized" rapid fire shots, but something about that usually leaves me with a cluster of out-of-focus shots. Besides that, it won't work with my flash unit that needs a couple of seconds to recharge.

Wes, I wish I'd thought to throw a penny or dime on the plate to serve as a comparative scale. I've done that shooting diminutive wildflowers, but it just never occurred to me here.

These spiders are kind of ambush hunters with good sight, but for the life of me I can't imagine what this tiny thing will find to eat inside the house, except perhaps some of its litter mates, if any. Not being the most scrupulous housekeeper, there's plenty of dust around, but dust mites are too small even for this guy!

I'm sure Becky won't find this thing cute, although it is furry. You know, statistically, unless you are in a polar region, you are never more than 9 feet away from some spider or other Smile

Oh now, did you have to go and throw that statistic in? Poor poor Becky! I can see her now - walk 9 feet, look around and shudder, then walk another 9 feet, ad infinitum! Sorry Becky, I just couldn't resist! Tongue Wink Grin
