| Icicle | April 7, 2009 @ 7:57pm | It has been very cold here. Cold enough to produce icicles. I caught this one late in the afternoon. A hint of sun and an image of a tree reflected seems to reveal interesting nature shapes encased in the ice. I can assure you there is nothing here but water and ice.

| April 8, 2009 @ 7:51am | This is fascinating. You can trace the tree all the way from the tip of the icicle!

| April 8, 2009 @ 8:58am | I can definitely see the tree in this icicle. If hadn't said anything, I would have thought this was a small twig of a tree covered with ice. Very nice illusion.

| April 8, 2009 @ 1:57pm | Yes Flo and Wes it is an interesting illusion. I spend a good long time trying to get a nice photograph of this icicle. Some of the pictures were very strange like this black one with a firey tip:

Later when I got the flash card to the computer and saw the twig inside I had to go back and take a good look because it looked to me like a stem encased in ice. That is quite common. But I did not remember seeing a stem. No this is just ice and water. There is a bit of silt and it is not 100% pristine clean but certainly no twigs inside just some spots of dirt. It is very close to a tree, a wooden planter and the water that formed the ice is run off from the planter soil and a bit on the muddy side so I am suspecting the scientific explanation for the illusion was the result of the light, a reflection and of course a tree spirit caught in the ice.

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W. |
