Tennis Anyone?April 22, 2009 @ 11:01pm
Hello all,

Last weekend I had the time to shoot at a local tennis tournament. Having been about five years since my last tournament, there was a lot of rust to shake off.

I am happy with the results, but I didn't get a shot that really wowed me. I guess I should not let so much time pass next time.

I would be interested in your collective feedback. Thank you

Cheers.

Chris

I think these are great action shots! You probably shot on burst mode? My only suggestion is to tone down the red color of the Wilson signs, even also desaturating them a little. In the 2nd image, esp, I get the illusion that the sign, being lighter than the player's shirt, is in front of him!

Although I no longer play tennis, Chris, your shots stirred up many wonderful moments on the court. I love the action in these shots.

Flo and Wes,

Thank you for the kind feedback. I was using bursts to capture these shots. For the most part they were three shot bursts and I was shooting slightly ahead of the action on the first one hoping to get the shot I wanted on the second for third frame.

Flo - I will try toning down the red on the Wilson sign. Thanks for the suggestion.

Chris,

I was a Producer for IBM's Real Time Events Team for 10 years. I was fortunate enough to travel the world to work at all 4 Grand Slams many times over. One of my responsiblities was to help process and post the photos we received from the photographers that were hired by our clients (Tennis Australia, The Lawn Tennis Championships aka Wimbledon, French Federation of Tennis and the USTA.)

Trust me, your shots are fine. I agree with Flo in blurring or desaturating the logos and other background bits.

Have a look at this:

We always look for shots that are a bit out of the ordinary, capturing raw emotion...making people who see the image think "Man, I wish I could have been there to see that."

You certainly have the skills. Looking forward to seeing more soon!

Cheers,
Robin

Robin,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. I feel bad for not logging on sooner to see your comments. I really appreciate someone with your experience commenting on my photos.

I looked at the gallery you mentioned and there are some GREAT shots there. I saw the "raw emotion" you were talking about.

Since this tournament is played in a very intimate setting, I will have a good opportunity to capture that emotion next time. I will also remember that those moments frequently happen after the the action stops.

Thank you.

Chris

Robin! You're a gal of many talents! Thanks for that link. Wow, such great shots. Too bad when one works for Getty Images that one doesn't get credit for images shot.

Danny,

Thanks for the compliment. The shutter speeds ranged from 1/750 to 1/4000. The apertures ranged from F2.8 to F3.5.

Hopefully I didn't create any confusion, Flo. I didn't take any of the shots represented in that link. Man, I wish I had that kind of talent. As the Producer of the sites, there were many times where I was needed to help the design team with minimal pp work, cropping, captions and posting to the live site.

I worked with (and the IBM team still works with) some fantastic sports photographers and writers. Jonathan Fickes (in NY -> http://www.jonathanfickies.com/) was one of my faves. Mainly 'cause he is a super, down-to-earth guy. There was another Frenchman in Paris who shot the most amazing clay court shots at Roland Garros. I can't remember his name (Johnny something) but he was an angry, odd little man.

In the early days each photographer would get credit and copyrights for photos posted on the official site, but now all of the photographers are put under the "event umbrella" and the rights belong to that particular event. Others become grouped with the likes of WireImage, Getty, etc. Of our many gigs, only the Tony Awards (www.tonyawards.com) still give credits to the individual photographers. I guess it's all about who gives away what when the contracts are signed.

Danny - keep it up. I look forward to more good stuff from you!
