The Great Photo Finish: Chris from Austria - July 2, 2009July 2, 2009 @ 7:05pm
In this episode of The Great Photo Finish Craig looks at a beautiful landscape photograph and discusses the a technique involving a keyboard shortcut for increasing dynamic range (manual HDR) by seamlessly blending a darker and lighter file. This technique is especially appropriate for scenes where the transition area from light to dark is very complex in terms of intricate detail and high contrast.

Craig - Great lesson! CTRL-ALT-2 does work in CS4 on the PC to select the brightest pixels.

Hello Craig!

Great tutorial!

Another way than the shortcut is simply to switch to channels and ctrl click on the top layer for PC. You should get the same selection.

PS: I have a similar workflow. I usually put those layers in a smartobject after the masking and don't flatten it. So it's easy to go back and do editing on the masks! Maybe interesting for your upcomming tutorialWink

kind regards,
Michael

The luminosity mask you created is indeed achieved by the control,alt,2 on a pc. You nailed the tutorial. Very clear and concise. Are you going to talk about inverting the selection and creating a shadow mask as well?

Janet

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W.

Hey Janet,

Thank you for the feedback and for letting us know about the PC shortcut. And yes I can talk about inverting the mask... great suggestion. Thank you for all of the ways you support the TME community. Have a great Fourth of July and weekend.... Craig

This style of teaching works for meJuly 3, 2009 @ 10:54am
Hi Craig,
I enjoyed the tutorial very much and am glad you have started this new section to "teach photoshop. I also really like the fact that you are "nuggeting" the elements into bite size pieces of information. Learning one or two aspects per tutorial and having a "sink" time to digest and mull over is very helpful for my type of a learning style....rather than a whole bunch of info in a long tutorial.

I am also excited that you are doing this feature as your type of post-processing seems more purposeful towards a beautiful end in mind, instead of plain technique learning for the sake of learning a technique. This helps me retain the information better.

Bottom line, I really appreciate learning from this site...in an open, supportive and inspirational way. Thank you.

Hi Craig

Many thanks for another great tutorial. Usha really does say it all and says it so well. Will these tutorials be available for download or purchase at some time? It would be good to be able to hang on them.

I was able to be in the U.S. for two 4th of July's and have great memories of those times so best wishes to all of you in the U.S. on your special day. Beer Mug Cheers!

Hey Jim,

Thank you for the kind words of support and the question..... its a question I have struggled with big time ever since I had to jump off of the RV sinking ship to keep from being drowned.

I am pretty sure that we will open a store near the end of this year where we will begin to offer archived downloads of batches of past videos/ tutorials. I am still working through the answer. I almost 100 per cent sure now we will not go to a paid membership (which would allow access to downloads.)

We will publish something on the site about this in the not too distant future..... Craig

Craig thank you so much.
I had this exact problem a few days ago and ended up making a real bodge job! Now I'll go back and fix it properly.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your guidance and dedication to sharing your knowledge. Happy 4th July! (I'm celebrating early for you in New Zealand).

So we have another Kiwi on board! Welcome. I hope you'll feel right a home here and I'm looking forward to seeing some of your work soon. Perhaps you can tell us, via a few images, what your problem was, how you "bodged" (gotta love expressions from other English-speaking countries I don't hear in the USA) it and what you're thinking of doing about it?

It'll help all of us learn. Smile

Unbelievable how many things I have learned in this few days since I submitted this image to The Mindful Eye. Craig, thanks again for this awesome video tutorial. I like your straight-lined way of showing a solution to a photographic problem. Your inspiring words have the power to improve my visions. Thanks for that.

Great tutorial Craig-------------I have used this method before but now I understand more fully what is going on and can see that it could be used in a much finer way than I have been doing up to now.

Hope you all had a great 4th July Holiday.

Can't wait for the next tutorial.

Flo thank you so much for your kind welcome.
I've been one of those behind the scenes but devoted followers of RV and TME for a while.
Having just discovered hdr, my 'bodge'! was while layering a real sky into an hdr image that had a tree in a similar position to Chris'. I was actually just experimenting, so would be too embarrassed to post it! I Look forward to sharing my next 'bodgeless' one though!

This is an A1 tutorial in every respect. This was the perfect amount of information for one 'absorption', and was really well organized and presented.

I'm really looking forward to the next installment, and the comments are great to read, also.

Great Stuff!July 7, 2009 @ 7:45am
Craig - I wanted to thank you again for this and the upcoming "Great Photo Finish" videos. These have such potential both as stand alone pieces and as reference material for Daily Critiques. It is obvious from all the comments that the lesson, all by itself, is incredibly useful. But in the future, when you do a critique where this technique is used, you will be able to refer to this video for the "how to" leaving more time to focus on other aspects of the critique.

I have one suggestion. It might be helpful to give these lessons more meaningful titles (e.g., "Increasing Dynamic Range 1"). Then it would be easy to look up and easier to refer to. Just a thought...

In any case, great material and wonderfully presented.

Ctrl-Alt-~July 9, 2009 @ 6:51pm
So I look to the bulletin board above my PC, and see a sticky note reading "To select the brightest pixels..." saved from way back.

But never, ever would have thought to apply this shortcut to extending dynamic range from 2 versions of a RAW file.

:: happy sigh ::

It is !AMAZING! to be able to learn so much from you, and the entire community here, every single day.

Simply amazing. Thank you.

I hope to be able to pay it back, with some images that say "Yes! It clicked." Smile

Hi Craig,

Thanks for a great tutorial!

A few comments/questions:

1) Since I have not yet been able to afford to buy CS4 (and I'm at the end of the upgrade rope at CS2), I'm happy to report that this technique even works on CS2!

2) Frequently, HDR techniques involve 3 different exposures, i.e dark, midrange, and bright. Can you skip a midrange exposure with this technique, or is it just this particular image?

3) Finally, it would be great if TME could add more playback options, such as a timeline slider to be able to move backwards or forwards in the tutorial, and maybe a volume control as well.

Again, thank you very much!

I'm looking forward to the second installment and to spending less time painting on layer masks, such as here: http://www.roamingpixels.com/entry/safe.

trouble playing part 1 of the videoSeptember 4, 2009 @ 1:43am
Your instruction is great and your vision incredible. I am unable to see part 1 of the video where you merge the two versions of the photo. I tried many times and it stops where you discuss use of the ND filer. I really think this is great info and would love to see it. It stops in the same spot each and every time so I am thinking there is a problem on your end. Are your tuturials for sale? Thanks for sharing your incredible skills. I just found the site and I am sure I will be here often and will avail myself of your classes etc.
