My first post, as I am a newbie to TME (thanks, Pam, for turning me on to this!) I am in the infancy stages of the love affair with my camera (Nikon D50) and have just stepped away from the preset modes. I am determined to understand the ins and outs of proper exposure and making the camera see what I want it to see. I know this site will become my educational and inspirational right arm.

I shot this (fingers crossed that I added the image url correctly and the photo actually shows up) in 2004 during a work-related trip to Melbourne, Australia using a friend's Nikon D1X. Yeah, I'm sure I shot it in Auto (cheater-cheater-pumpkin-eater!) but still love how the lighting showed off the unusual intricacies of the spider web.

I look forward to more (current) posts plus learning from all of you seasoned photographers out there! I also promise not to be so wordy in my future posts. Wink

Welcome, Robin! How exciting for you to be in the initial stages of a love affair with your camera! If this image is any indication of your shooting abilities, you already have a great eye for composition. I do love how well that web shows its details. And I also love the B&W conversion.

The web is intricate and so is the wrought iron decoration that the spider attached it to.

Some might suggest cropping from either side, but I think that the way you have framed this to include a tiny piece of the iron at left plus another "head" of the iron at right gives us a strong suggestion that this decoration is on a wider scale than the little part of it we see here.

BTW, please be wordy, lol. I sometimes wax wordy, too.

Love this capture, Robin. Welcome to the community. This, to my eye and memory, isn't the typ8cal spider web as frequently seen, the usual circles and radii from the center. I like the difference here and if my imagination can go crazy, I can envision each of the holes being filled with stained glass colors. They look so much like stain glass shapes to me. Very nice to look at.

I guess one might look at a crop to simplify by getting rid of the pieces of gate to the left and right but those objects don't bother me. I tried making this a vertical pano but somehow it just didn't look right.

I like it as it is.

Welcome to the community RobindeM,

When I view your photograph, I think of a worn, torn doily caught on the gate after a wind dropped it. The finials (?) look like two stoical guards unmoved by the lace wrapped around their heads.
I like how the light makes the spider’s web stand out. Well done.

Yipeee!! Comments from those with talent! Thank you, everyone. The kind words gave me goosebumps, or "goose b-b's" as my 5-year old says.

Welcome, Robin. I like that the spider has made this "man-made" object her own. The web shows up very nicely and I like the whole image.

Actually, Becky likes this because it doesn't show the spider! Grin
