Gee, do all bumble bees in the UK have that bright orange on the ends of their abdomens? How did you get so close without driving it away? I had no luck with bees yesterday and there were so many of them, large and small, but they were all very shy.

This one looks like he posed for you, Garth. I like the orange effect. Is that pollen?

Thanks Flo an Wes, I was at minimum focus, approx 3 feet, hand held , the orange on its rear sometimes like that and yellow and black striped. The pollen is on its legs. BTW I think its a queen.

It's my understanding that bumble bees live solitary lives. So this one is probably a female and she has a nest underground or bored into old wood - and she then lays her eggs. Honey bees have one queen per hive in which live all the other sterile females who tend the eggs and larvae and the queen, who gets too heavy with eggs to fly after her maiden mating voyage. The males are good for only one thing - and that's mating with the newly emerged young queen. Otherwise, the males don't do a lick of work. I don't know anything about the male bumble bees - perhaps they live the life of Reilly, lol.
