Here's one of the motel I am staying in for work. It was a simple shot but I do like how one starts comparing the sides. Any comments or suggestions are always welcome.

A compelling photo for the reason you stated, Dan. One might assume that the room on the left might offer more security due to the visible deadbolt above the knob. But you know what happens when we ASS-U-ME! Well seen and captured.

The room on the left might be safer, but you can also shower outside as you sit in the chair directly under the window AC compressor.

Sam and Sean, you crack me up! Grin

I love looking at this image. Symmetrical - but first thing I noticed is the placement of the chairs. Then I noticed the dead bolt on the left door. And then the curtain and the cracks where the ends of the boards are starting to rot at the right.

Thanks for the comments! It does interest me how we all view an image the same way.

Danny, it's funny you mentioned turning the nonsmoking sign upside down. I'm staying in a room across from these ones and my sign is upside down. I would take a picture but the room next door doesn't have a sign so I'm not sure it would work. I could always do it in photoshop on this photo.

I'm going to post another image. Not the most exciting shot but I took it because it gives a sence of place. What can you tell from the photo about where it was taken, time of day and so on. Not a big stretch because of the first image. I wanted to start a project with the theme of working on the road. These are the first two images.

I took another shot a few weeks ago that could go along with the same theme. I had this one on Flickr and someone called it an artsy prison photo. LOL! It was a practical photo as I shaved my head and wanted to check if I missed any spots.

Dan the second image is very powerful and graphic. I was envisioning slight variations in crops...as square one perhaps....but the lower lement get lots.

Good work

Quote (MrNikkor)

Hmm,

Not sure, the light is not coming from the lamp but from the right of it... you can see the reflection in the body of the lamp, and the large one in the door knob and there is two light sources... I am guessing one of them is a TV?

The curtains look drawn but that is no true accounting of time, I could not hope to pinpoint it but looking at the light on the wall it seems highly focused and falls off quickly, to be honest my first guess would an off camera stobe with a grid spot and tv on.

Hmm apart from that I would say tv on and bathroom door open to control the spill of light with bathroom light on illuminating the scene.

Am I in anyway close Dan as I am not familiar with american motel rooms Wink

Now this is getting intriguing! In the first image of this 2nd group, the light is definitely not coming from the lamp with its stained shade. Unless the bathroom door and light are very close to the door and lamp, then you must have held a strobe off to the right. No telling what time of day it is, but I'd guess night. If it were daylight, I'd think there might be some light bleed around the edge of the curtain at left. But then all motels that I've stayed at also have lights outside, which would bleed into the room around the edge and bottom of the curtain. But the light from the strobe must have overpowered any light coming in from outside.

The 2nd shot is amazing! Do you really go thru these contortions each time you shave your head????? Imagine that! A guy who shaves his head has to pack not only his shaver/razor, but also his digital camera to see if he missed a spot! What is the modern world coming to? Seems a cell phone with camera could do the job better, lol. (Back in the good old days, guys used a hand mirror tilted just so!)

I do like the extreme perspective distortion, too.

Thanks for the input! The lamp shot, here's a hint, no strobe or light was used, so it's natural light. There is only four things in the shot, what do they suggest. I'll let you know after a few more guesses. Remember the theme is working on the road.

In the shaved shot, again I'm working on the road alone. I don't carry a mirror (I'm a guy) and can't go outside to ask a stranger if I missed a spot.

Thanks again!

When you say natural light Dan does that include Headlight lamps from cars?

The floor lamp, lovely curtains, chain slide lock, cool paneling, and the "Do Not Disturb" knob sign scream motel (but as you said, easy to guess from your first post on this subject). Was the "natural" light provided from a television? Maybe light given off from the bathroom?

Is the natural light from a hole in the wall or ceiling? I was once offered an inexpensive motel room...with no door! I declined.

Your B&W work is wonderful.

Thanks! No DOOR! Yes, the words thanks but no thanks would be heard from my lips shortly after finding out there is no door.

Yes Sam, you got it! It is a simple photo but what it says to me is it's another work day staying in a motel. The do not disturb sign would be on the other side if it was a rare day off.

The light was direct sunlight coming in the bathroom window as well as two other windows. I figured people may pick up on the early morning or late in the day as the time of day.

Thanks for looking!
