I dont usually get these critters spinning a web. Most of the time they just sit there. It was very breezy and it was hard to keep it in focus.

To get a sense of scale I include this. It has wrapped a fruit fly in silk here. This is a small one. I love the scary pirate symbol tattoed on the abdomen.

Michael, that's incredible - looks like you caught her spinneret in motion in the 1st one! She's awfully tiny, yet you did a great job of capturing her. Spiders can have fantastically intricate markings.

I'll bet Rick might have some idea of her genus.

I feel your pain--wind on a spider web is even worse than wind on wildflowers. Good for you to catch a couple of shots between oscillations.

Flo, thanks for the vote of confidence, but you overestimate my abilities. By family, it's almost certainly an Araneidae. After that it comes down to examining a bunch of nearly microscopic features on sexually mature individuals. Based on the size, this little lady might not be mature yet, but we'd have to catch sight of her epigynum to even be sure of that (it's kind of hidden under the fourth legs in these shots).

So let's just appreciate the pictures we have here! Michael, a lot of these orb weavers do most of their web building and repair after dark. You might try going out after sunset with a light (for focusing) and your flash. The wind may be calmer, and you might get some good shots then.
