Had to look up at this one which was about 8 ft. high and the blossom about 10 in across. One third of the size of the world record of 32.4 in across (approx). But it is a big find for me....

Hi Wes,
That is a big beautiful sunflower! It’s fun to find surprises like this one.
Thanks for sharing.

Quite a find, Wes. It'd be a world record for me, lol. What a beaut of a flower head. I've always wondered why more of these aren't knocked down by wind and hard rain, of which the east has had a lot this year. I love the colors in this image, too.

Thanks, Charlene. Sunflowers always give me energy and joy so this big one had a powerful effect on me.

It is a record for me, so far, too, Flo. If you look at the size of that stem, for one bloom, it is understandable why they are so sturdy. But, even then, if the wind is strong enough, I am sure this one would succumb also. When they grow this high, I think the record is 25 feet tall, they must be more susceptible to wind breakage.

Even if it doesn't succumb to wind, as soon (that is the instant nanosecond) as those seeds are ripe the animals (birds, squirrels, mice, raccoons) will drag it down to earth. And 10 inches is perfect dinner plate size, isn't it?

Nicely lit, by the way!

Wes, I love the center of the sunflower. Looks like an open mouth, perhaps singing the praises of the sun and sky.

Wow, that's a beauty!! Wes, did you use flash on the flower and negative EC for ambient exposure? Very nice exposure overall.

Thank you Rick and so true. I haven't been back to see what shape it is in but I'll bet there has been some dining damage.

Thank you Abhi, I did use a small onboard flash with a diffuser attached to it but everything else was at their default setting. I am still trying out the new little Olympus E-P1 and had just received the small flash that is designed for it. I jerry rigged a diffuser from opaque plastic.

Wes, a tissue makes a great diffuser, too.
