Guarded 24/7, 365 day a year. A change of the guard takes place every 30 min. It is a great honor for these men to guard this tomb. The ceremony is exquisite in its precision and imparted an incredible sense of honor to this viewer. I hope you enjoy.

Great shot Sam,

I like the strong diagonal line that the marine is standing on, and the fact that you kept the tree in the frame on the right as it definitely helps the image.

A nice crop I saw in this image is to crop from the left towards the marine turning the landscape into a more personal and powerful portrait.

Very powerful. I like how the cloud formations lead to the tomb.

This is very powerful. I like all parts of the composition.

However, I wonder how many of us could do what these young men do? Just think what it would be like, standing at attention for 30 minutes in the broiling sun dressed in full uniform and no way to wipe off the sweat that might come streaming down into his eyes. Do they do this even in the midst of pouring rain, sleet, snow - hurricanes, blizzards?

The Brits do this, too. The Palace Guards. So we're just following in a long tradition. But - -

We each will draw our own conclusions.

Thank you to everyone who viewed/commented. Flo, the guards are on duty throughout the year in all kinds of weather. You can find a complete description of the ceremony at arlingtoncemetery.org including the requirements necessary to become a guard.
If you look where the guard is standing, on that black rubber runner, you may be able to see how the rubber is almost worn through. This is where he stands for 21 secs. looking east, then turns to look north for 21 secs. He then walks 21 steps and repeats the drill. From Oct. through Mar. the guard is changed every hour, all other months the change is every 30 min.
