For me, too bad about the leaf lower left corner. Maybe I should crop it up?

I love the twisted tension and the way it seems to point into the light. Nicely seen. Could you call this a Morning Glory in its Evening Glory phase?

The lower left leaf doesn't bother me, but there's a greenish blur to the lower portion of the flower that makes me think there was another leaf very close to the lens that got itself partially into your shot. I think that because it's happened to me with distressing frequency Undecided . --Or was this a Lens Baby shot?--

Michael, what a gorgeous image, gorgeous spirals, gorgeous composition and colors.

Just do some local blurring of that leaf and then it'll fit in with the rest of the softness.

No not a lensbaby. It was with the 100 mm macro but open to F 2.8 Could have been some leaf in front this was one of my "point and shoot" efforts.

The flower is in a position very difficult to get to and almost impossible to bend down and compose through the view finder. My technique in these situations is to just hold the camera and imagine the shot I want, pointing it like a gun and hoping the auto focus will find the right sweet spot and the composition will match what I see in my mind's eye.

It usually takes a dozen blurry half shots but heck thats what digital is all about for me.

Like Flo I really like the spiral.

To show what I mean you get lots of this:

and many times the auto focus will decide the back fence or whatever is much more interesting than a little flower:

Michael, thanks for sharing your shooting technique with us. I do this sometimes when it's impossible for me to get my eye down to the level of the plant/flower. Usually, tho, I don't get any keepers.

Michael, lovely image. I too like the spiral and the colors.

I too try this way of shooting. Sometimes I get lucky and like you say - that is what makes digital good. Just delete those other ones, of course be careful not to delete the good shots as well.

I really like the muted colors in the shot, and yeah, the spiral shape is cool.

I haven't really tried any macro stuff. I'll have to do a little research, and give it a try. Is there a lens you can recommend for a Nikon user to get started?

Hi Marti, thanks for commenting. I am a Canon user so I do not know for sure but I saw many really nice Nikon Macros.

I use a 100mm F2.8 macro lens which is one of my very favorite of all lenses. I can hardly wait until I get a full frame camera so it will be less of a telephoto and I think it will be a really good portrait lens as well.

I guess you want something that will when open up give a good background blur but be sufficiently sharp and fast enough to freeze motion.

I'd speak with other Nikon users and a reputable dealer.

Marty, if you have a 50mm lens and a longer telephoto, you can get a ring that will allow you to mount the 50mm lens backwards onto the telephoto. You'll have to take both lenses to the camera shop so they can show you how.

That's one way. Another way would be to get at least one extension tube - again, the camera shop folks can advise you.

A third way is to buy one of Nikon's or other brand's macro lens attachments. These screw on like filters on the front of your lens. Try the various magnifications on your 50mm lens at the camera store.

The 4th way is to spend the money on Nikkor's 100mm macro - or the Sigma or Tamron 90-100mm macro lenses.

Hi Michael,

Very nice macro - I love the spiraling motion up and into the light! Purple moving into white light definitely leaves room for a variety of possible spiritual interpretations. The bit of leaf in the lower left doesn't get in the way for me - it might be worth trying a bit of blur there to see if that helps or just clone it out. Nicely captured!

Best Wishes,
Eric
