| NWF photo contest winners | December 4, 2008 @ 11:27am | I'm not sure why I'm on their email list, but I just received a notification that the National Wildlife Foundation has announced the winners of their annual photo contest. The link to the winners is:

In reading the backstories, I was struck by the ratio of "right place, right time" to planned shots. Most fell into the first category, but the photographers capitalized on their opportunity--they didn't lose the shot by having to switch lenses or grope in their bags for some filter. The planned shots were more amazing to me. Check out the red-winged blackbird on a winter day shot--the photographer knew the image he wanted to capture, but still had to wait for just the right time and day to get it.

| December 4, 2008 @ 2:55pm | Thanks so much for the link, Rick. Those are some spectacular shots. I just might grab my camera with whatever lens is on it at the moment and just go out and wait somewhere to see what shows up. In my area, I doubt I will see a bird blowing smoke rings, thought. What a shot that was!!

| December 5, 2008 @ 7:12am | You can get a hard copy of these photos that also includes the Highly Recommended as well as the winners. Nature's Best magazine's latest issue (Fall 2008) has them.
I want a stroboscope! That bat shot is magnificent.
