| Leaf Hub | January 11, 2010 @ 1:27pm | This image of a castor bean leaf turned out overexposed slightly. So to fix, I took it to PS CS3 and created a black file to lay on top of the leaf image. I don't remember now which blending mode proved to do the trick - but it did add interest and details which weren't very visible in the original.

| January 11, 2010 @ 5:40pm | Leaves have such amazing designs. I especially like the red lines (veins) radiating out to the edges. I notice the bottom edge is soft focus and was wondering how it might look with a softer edge around the perimeter and a touch of vignetting. Do you think this might help direct the focus more to the centre of the radiating lines?

| January 12, 2010 @ 2:04pm | I like it. And your little trick brings to mind one I often use but I add a step where I do a 'filter-stylize-find edges' to the B&W image, flatten it and then layer it onto the original and play with blending modes. The effect can be quite striking and surprising. It is also useful to add definition to a slightly out of focus image. Again, nice work and thanks for sharing.

| January 12, 2010 @ 2:46pm | Thanks, Bill. The black layer I added is not a converted-to-B&W layer. It's a pure black file - made it the same size as the original, background=transparent. Then painted in the black over the whole file.
But thanks for the "find edges" tip.
Sometimes, with a too-dark image, I'll use a white file, same size, to see if I can "rescue" it a bit. Sometimes it works very well.

Well then, I've learned an entirely new technique. Thanks for clarifying.

Bill, I tried the "find edges" technique - but after I got into CS3, I'd forgotten the order in which you said you did it. So after I'd flattened the merge - original plus B&W layer - then I created a dupe layer for the "find edges". It worked this way, too - but don't remember the blend mode, lol. I also had to back off on the opacity, too - but perhaps that would be different for different images.

Flo, my workflow usually goes something like: 1. Duplicate image. 2. Convert to B&W (cycle thru presets & then make manual adjustments for best contrast) 3. Flatten 4. Find edges 5. Adjust brightness with a curves layer (optional) 6. Flatten 7. Select all, copy 8. Paste to original 9. Cycle through blending modes - every image is different - while playing with opacity. Would enjoy seeing some of your results if you try again.
Here's an example where I used the technique to give more definition to an otherwise very soft original. The effect may be a tad overdone on the building, but demonstrates the results at least. I also made other adjustments to enhance colour and so on.

| January 15, 2010 @ 8:49am | Wow, Bill - thanks for the workflow - you do the find edges on the B&W conversion first, while I did it last. And the transformation in the building landscape is amazing!
Now I know the easy "fix" for soft images!
Bill, may I snitch your workflow and those two images for the post processing of the Hints website that I've cobbled together from hints and how-to's that members have posted here and at the former RV? You'll be given credit, just as I've given credit to the others.
