Craig,

This was another awesome tutorial. Your teaching style makes thing so clear and understandable. Recording actions is something I'm sure I will end up using. Thanks.

Do you know if we have to be careful for any .atn files that we download from the internet that might mess up our Photoshop settings unintentionally or any that might be malicious?

If an action is run that changes a setting in Photoshop and the program is later restarted, will that setting still be changed?

Thanks,
Curt

On the topic of settings, in case someone doesn't know this, You can reset just your tools or you can also reset all your settings to the way Photoshop was when you installed it.

To restore all your settings do one of the following:

Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop.

You have to do this quickly. Have your fingers ready on all three keys so you can push them down at the same time and hold them right after you click your program to start. You are then asked if you want to delete your current settings.

(Mac OS only) Open the Preferences folder in the Library folder, and drag the Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash.

New Preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.

Hey Curt,

Thank you for the kind words of support and the tip.

Like all files downloaded from the internet its all about the source. As long as you get actions from folks that you know or are widely known you should be fine.

As far as an action changing a setting...the answer is complicated....yes that is possible.....for instance....if an action included a change of your interpolation method or a preference then it will stay that way when the action is finished playing.... but knowing that - you should record a change back to your normal preference settings in the action.

You can always click the down arrow button to see what all an action is actually doing..... and recording actions doesn't generally include changing photoshop preferences.

Hope that helps. Thanks for being here Curt!....Craig

Craig thank you so much for this one. I have just recorded my first action and I must have done it all right because it works. I am thrilled! Twice over!

How timely!

I'm just beginning to explore black and white conversions. Based on your previous tutorials, but before watching this video, I recorded an Action to copy channels into layers. BUT! Your sequence is much more streamlined; that part about "click here to make it work" is key.Smile

Thank you, again and again!

Very well done tutorial.

You are an excellent teacher.

Janet

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W.

And if we don't have CS4 - and won't for the near future - will this method work in CS3?

Oh yes, I've been told that if I upgrade and have brushes, actions, etc, that I've made or downloaded from sources other than PS itself, I'll lose them unless I take them back out of CS3 and save them somewhere until the upgrade is finished installing?

That is not correct. An "upgrade" install of Photoshop is a totally new install. It doesn't remove (or even affect) the previous version(s). After you install the new one you can bring in the brushes, actions, etc. that you used in the prior version. You don't have to remove them from CS3, but you might want to copy them to a new folder and then install them in CS4. That way, when you do remove the old vesion, after getting up to speed on the new version, you don't wipe them out.

Thanks, John, for clarifying what I mean to say, DUH! Yeah, do not delete the old version until you have rescued the stuff you want from it, lol. Lips Are Sealed

If any of you are creating this action on your own I recommend you also add a layer mask to each layer before stopping the recording.
That's a minor thing but if you want to combine information from different layers you have the masks already available.

Also, in the beginning it can be quite difficult to know exactly how to use the layer masks to bring out information from the different layers. For example, how should I paint on the masks if I want to use the foreground from the red layer, the sky, clouds and the distant tree from the green layer etc.?

This is how you do it. Paint with black in the area you want to bring out on all layers above.

Have a look at my blog for more information.

Thank you Craig for another set of easy to use instructions. I used to convert to B&W by another way - but I like the 3 Channels approach better.

Thank you also for the "3 Channels" action set, appreciate it - it works just great!

Merci, Monsieur!
