Thank you for the heads up, Flo. I will be out in the garden on the 24th of April and you will be on your way down to Alexandria. Hopefully we will both be having great experiences. See you then.

Thanks for the link, Flo. One of these days, I'll make a pinhole camera. There are some cool groups on flickr.

Does it count if you turn your DSLR into a pinhole camera?

Yes, those count. I have a pinhole body cap and the Lensbaby pinhole, but there's something more magical about low-tech pinhole cameras.

I'll be out there with my ZeroImage pinhole box camera, shooting Fuji Acros 100. Best film for pinhole cameras, especially those with hand-operated shutters -- almost no reciprocity failure.

My son will be there with me. He'll have just turned 7, and he'll have just received a brand new 35mm pinhole camera kit, just in time.

Wes, you and I will be on our way to Savannah on the 24th - that's Sunday! It's the 23rd, Saturday, the day I'll be driving down to meet you at your place. So we'll just have to shoot some pinholes on the way to Savannah.

TJ, when you use a body cap pinhole, or a special turret like I have which takes the place of a lens, or the Lensbaby pinhole/zone plate optic, on a digital body, it's a true pinhole - a tiny little hole - no lens - which fits the definition of a pinhole camera.

Mark, thanks for the tip on that film, Fuji Acros 100. I've never heard of it. I too have a ZeroImage pinhole camera, but haven't used it for a long while. Glad it doesn't need batteries, lol. Can you tell us more about this pinhole camera kit you got your son?

The proper name is Fujifilm Neopan 100 Acros.

In bright light you want a slowish film so you can be reasonably accurate with your shutter; with my ƒ/158 camera, the exposure time at ISO 100 is 1 second at EV 14 ⅔, which is Sunny/16 conditions. And with a shutter time of one second, it's very easy to make a full stop error when you're opening and closing the shutter by hand.

And this film is faster than most 400 speed films in lower light, thanks to minimal reciprocity failure. Fujifilm says only 1/2 stop from 120 to 1000 seconds, which is remarkable, and if you search you can find many tests bearing this out.

I happened into the 35mm pinhole camera kit in a Christmas time Yankee Swap at work. I haven't opened the box, no idea what it's like.

Coming Up Saturday!April 22, 2010 @ 1:59pm
So - everyone ready? I'll have my Nikon all primed and
"hanging out the window" then - meaning that Saturday while I'm driving to D.C. to meet Wes, I'll be stopping a couple of times and trying to get something decent - I also hope I'll get to Wes' in time to do some shooting there, too.

It's Sunday, 4/25!April 22, 2010 @ 2:04pm
Flo,

That sounds like good practice, but Pinhole Day is Sunday, April 25th. Always the last Sunday in April. http://www.pinholeday.org/

I'm ready, though I don't have any specific plans for what I'll shoot, where, or when. I've got some rolls of Acros and some of Ektar, and will be looking for opportunities.

I'm ready with a new pinhole cap -- self-drilled, but sharper than my last -- and some ideas based on initial experiments:

* Getting very close to a subject so it's large in the frame against the extended depth of field.

* Using an extension tube with the pinhole cap. (It works!)

* Long exposures on the lakefront, for movement of water and clouds, depending on weather.

* Multiple exposures.

* Starbursts in a twilight sky? Haven't tried, but with that tiny aperture...

Good to know we have an extra day to practice. Smile

Thanks, Mark, for the correction! Last year it must have been Sunday April 24! For some reason, the number 24 has embedded itself in my brain.

April, what did you use to drill your own pinhole?

I used a standard bit to drill a 1/8" hole in the body cap. (Could be larger.) Over that is taped a piece of Roscoeflex M which was pierced with the smallest needle I could find.

The Roscoeflex came with a free sample kit. It's a silver reflective material with a "tough, durable base" that has some give and allowed for a smooth hole. (No filing or burnishing required.)

Images are still soft, but much better than the tin foil or foil pan I tried last year.

One thing I did learn was to be very careful about centering both holes. Had to buy a new body cap for this year's attempt!

I know where we will be on Sunday, Flo. I hope to put the pinhole optic in the composer and travel with that. Who knows what might be around to capture.

So who did it?

I put my cap through the drill press and then taped some aluminum foil over the drilled hole. I punched the pinhole using a small sewing needle.

The first shot below is at 1/30s at ISO 25600. If my math is correct, based on the sunny 16 rule, my aperture should be f/512. Wow Cheesy

And here's a shot from a tripod. This one was 1 second at ISO 12800.

TJ, how creative, making your own pinhole. you also got good results.

Mark, this is a great way to commemorate your show.

While Wes and i were driving down here to Savannah yesterday, it was dark, gray and raining. I-95 is not noted for its beautiful scenery south of the DC area. So even tho I tried a few shots, I got absolutely nothing inspiring. But I did figure out a few things about the camera.

I was using a turret with 3 different sized pinholes and a zone plate. I used the zone plate exclusively, because it was so dark and gloomy and I didn't haved a tripod.

Having gotten nothing by the time we got to Savannah, we did go out shooting around City Marketplace. And I did get one good image - well, it's not all that good, but it's the best I could produce all day. It needs a little work before I can post it.

I hope all the others who participated had better luck with the weather than we did.

A turret? I've never heard of this for a camera body, and a quick search isn't pulling up the solution. Could you snap a picture with a different body and post? Inquiring minds...

It was cold, but with storm light and high wind I had hopes for long exposures on the lakefront. Scouted some possibilities, set up with the 50mm, calculated exposure, switched to the pinhole cap and started shooting...

Only to discover I brought the wrong cap: solid, no pinhole.

'k. On to plan B: multiple exposures in my back yard. Did some experiments with the 50mm for composition. Then it started to rain.

In hindsight, I should have brought out an umbrella and shot anyway! That might have been interesting.

I'm chalking this Day up to food for future investigations. Smile

April, I'm sorry your day was a wash-out.

The turret I spoke about is no longer manufactured.

I forgot to mention...April 26, 2010 @ 10:03pm
I gave my son a pinhole kit for his 7th birthday last week, which he was very excited about -- but he was also rather excited about his other presents, and with my gallery opening also this weekend we didn't find time to build it before Sunday.

But we will sometime soon, and we're looking forward to the results.
