Article on Night/Star PhotographyMay 14, 2010 @ 10:32am
Hi all,

I've been working on an article about night photography specifically for dark skies that also include landscapes (ground-based objects). I've just finished a draft and have uploaded it here:

http://www.texbrick.com/photo/notes/starshots.pdf

This is based on my experiences and covers shooting locations, conditions, gear, and post processing. Let me know if you have any comments. This is something that I'll update over time as I continue with this type of photography. Thanks!

TJ, that's quite an informative article. I think you must have covered just about everything concerned with shooting pinpoint stars instead of star trails. Congratulations. Thanks for sharing. Your images are gorgeous.

TJ...

I just found this, after seeing a reference to it in another thread. Thanks for this info! I'll be in the Smoky Mountains next week. If the skies are somewhat clear, I'll give it a try, and let you know how it goes.

Thank you TJ. This is excellent work. I'll be reading this again, (so that it will sink into my brain and perhaps stay there), then maybe I will have to give it a try.Smile

Wow TJ, what a comprehensive article. I just glanced at it and will be reading in (several times) in great detail. Loved your mix of text and images...keeps it very informative and pleasing to the eye. Also, I really liked how you broke it up into subject matter areas and really covered all of the relevant ares that are needed by photographer. Fantastic reference article.

I would really encourage you to try and send it to various forums, magazines and websites for their review and use. This has great potential.

Nice going.

Ultra-useful information in a well-organized, concise format. I'm almost feeling guilty for reading it for free--a lot of people have paid good money to other sources for this kind of information, and they probably learned less than what you have just passed along.

Fascinating!

I remember being enthralled by these photos when some of them were first posted to TME. It's a treat to be able to peek behind the scenes and see how they were created.

You could teach a workshop around this!

We're going to be in some high country for a little while this summer, so I've printed a copy of your article. Smile

Thank you for sharing your discoveries.

One suggestion, since the article is lengthy: A table of contents at the top to provide an overview of what's covered, with links to each section.

Well done!

This was certainly timely - I was just talking to my DH about some night shooting. Good information. Thanks.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your comments.

I'm more than happy to share this with others. I hope it helps to inspire and encourage others to try this type of photography. At least get out in the dark and enjoy the night sky! Grin

On the Big Bend workshop last year, I was really amazed at how many people had never seen the Milky Way before! I understand, but it's something everyone should see in their lifetime!

My first thought was how generous of you to share this tutorial. My second thoughts, upon reading this, is that it is very well written, concise, and most importantly, very informative. What a treasure. It also made me want to try my hand at this fascinating subject. Now if the night sky would cooperate and remain clear....

Thank you very much.

Janet

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your kind comments.

I had updated the article last month and then forgot to upload it. Anyway, I've just uploaded the revised article now. If you check it out again, you should see the changes.

I added a table of contents (thanks for the suggestion, April) and also some notes regarding temperature and noise performance.

I've been really terribly busy at work and haven't had time to check things out here. It's good to see Craig and the daily critiques back Grin
