For those who think that "they" are not creative, Elizabeth Gilbert, the author, has a different approach that you might find interesting:

Fascinating speaker, Marti. I enjoyed listening to talk about her philosophy about creativity.

Interesting subject and speaker.

I'm a believer in those flashes of inspiration that can come on like a steam train, but fear almost always closes the door.

Yes I know, I am blaming fear, it's all fears fault.

As I look back on 59 years of life it appears that fear of being no #1 is one of my lessons in "this" life that has to be over come.

For me to be creative I have to almost walk what I call a knife edge.
One part is in a place that cannot be seen but rather felt, the other is the physical realm of reality.

It's when I allow the door of the "felt" to open do I also feel the fear creep in.
The fear tags of mad, dreamer, eccentric, in the clouds, start to etch their characters across my forehead.

So what have I done, ............ close the door on the "felt" and remain in reality, after all, every one understands what they can see or hear.

Even as I ponder whether to hit the submit button, I feel those name tags arise..

That Fear!!May 23, 2010 @ 8:35am
Hi Stephen,

I can fully understand where you are coming from. I, too, still suffer from that fear of success. When one grows up with such admonitions as "don't brag on yourself" or "don't go getting a big head", it's difficult to ever see yourself as being #1. I started reading Marianne Williamson a number of years ago, and that has helped.

Still -- that bit of fear is there and holds me back many times.

But, it's never ever too late to start overcoming it. Just show up. Show up and continue the journey, even when that nagging fear raises it's ugly head!!

For those of you who do not know the quote from Marianne Williamson that Elizabeth Gilbert references in the video, here it is:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. " ~ Marianne Williamson

My favorite line in this quote is "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world."

Keep going down that path and keep taking it one step at a time!! I know that you and I are not the only ones on this Community who are on the same path.

Yes, the fear factor is strong, still, in me. I've taken 6 TME workshops that are geared to helping participants overcome their fears and rise to challenges - yet still, the fear persists.

My fear originally stems from the impression I got as a child that nothing I ever did was good enough for my mother! Yeah, I know I shouldn't be blaming HER for this - I'm not, not any more. it's just that I'm still allowing this childhood fear to control much of what I try to do creatively.

Outside the field of photography, painting and other visual arts, I've watched programs on TV in which talented - read "unafraid" - designers come to the rescue of people who got stuck in trying to decorate their houses or make over their yards. In every case it's the fear of doing something and then not being happy with the results. This fear almost totally stifles people's creativity.

OK, back to watching this all over again, lol. Maybe if I watch it enough times?

One of my favorite quotes -- mantra -- is from a workshop with Craig and Marti: "Just show up." So full of meaning.

And here in this talk, Elizabeth Gilbert says "Keep showing up."

Love it!

Thank you for posting this, Marti.
