In the color version the black and red on the bird really stood out against a marsh background. So I tried to improve on that contrast in this B&W version..??

Huh?

This is striking - I'd like to see the color version, too, to understand what you're talking about.

Here is the color version. Is it better?

I LOVE the first image. The second is also nice but the first is extraordinary

Thanks, John. Not "better" - just different. Either would make a great print. To capture the bird with its colors showing like that is a great feat. On the color version you might want to darken the top of the sky a tad, to help the viewer stay within the photo.

I definitely like the black and white version, John. It simplifies the image and I tend to concentrate on the bird instead of being distracted by all of the colors in the background. I also like the crop which simplifies the image even more.

Thanks Wes,
That's kinda what I was trying to do was drive all the attention to the bird. Both with the crop and the B&W treatment.

The first is wonderfully graphic -- red, white, and black so powerful -- with such a feeling of flight!

One thing which amazes me is that you 'saw' this image in your original capture.

Cool.
