| One Pink Single Rose | June 23, 2010 @ 9:08am | The one and only rose bush that has survived my increasingly shady yard is a single hybrid tea. Sorry, but I no longer remember its patented name.
Since I do not have a dedicated macro lens, I must make-do with attachments. This latest experiment stacked 3 filters and attachments onto my 24mm Nikkor 2.8 lens.
First was the B+H visible light pass filter, which I like because it cuts thru anomalies produced by infra red wavelengths that affect sensors in visible light color photography. I feel it produces better, cleaner colors.
Next was a circular polarizer.
Finally I screwed on the macro lens attachment that is part of Opteka's semi-fisheye attachment. This macro lens is necessary or the semi-fisheye won't focus. But when using the macro by itself on another lens, it must come last, as it has 2 male threads instead of the usual male-female set-up.
Since the macro attachment was so far from the 24mm lens, this created a slight vignetting in the corners.
Another effect is that only the center of the image is undistorted. The macro attachment is ground so it conforms to the semi-fisheye and not a normal lens. But this gives images shot this way a sort-of Lensbaby look.
Nikon D300, 24mm Nikkor 2.8 lens. ISO 800. WB daylight. F/8 @ 1/125. Distance to subject about 1-2 inches.

First I set the black and white points, using a Threshold adjustment layer. Then I used a Curves adjustment layer, as I could not see the set points on the image, as is supposed to happen. But they did show up when I created the Curves layer. I also had to set the black and white points on the Curves layer.
The Threshold layer is just to find the pixels closest to pure black and pure white. You must then set them with the Curves layer.
I painted through the Curves layer to brighten the details in the flower's center. Blend mode was Multiply. Then I used Craig's sharpening method as he explained in a couple of his recent videos.
Oh yes, I had to do a lot of "gardening," as the black point also made all the tiny spots of dirt show up on the rose's petals.
So what do you think of the transformation? Which do you prefer, the original or the Curves version?

Which to I prefer? About half way between the two. The reason for me would be detail versus contrast and darker color.

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W. |

This is what I like in this picture.
I have to say that I prefer the first picture for its smoothnes and its light. I would accentuate the brightness parts though, particulary around the heart of the flower. Maybe you'll loose the light cyan at some places but on the whole the picture will gain vivacity and lightness... I think
I admire the way you manage with all those filters. Chapeau!

| June 24, 2010 @ 6:47am | Thanks, Janet and Micheline, for weighing in on what you like between these two images. I was trying for dramatic lighting, which I did achieve, at the loss of some details.

Did you work with masks?

| June 24, 2010 @ 7:44pm | I sometimes feel like I'm working too hard for macro shots, lying on the ground with my face almost in the dirt, shooting some tiny critter. But based on complexity of set up, you win the "too hard work" prize!
Since you ask, I find I like the first version with the more delicate pink colors. The more dramatic light of your processed image has darkened the pinks and lost some of that charm. But they are two different pictures, projecting two different moods.

| June 25, 2010 @ 7:37am | Micheline, no I did not use masks. If I had, I could have restored some of the lighter pink.
Rich, thanks for your comments. I didn't have to crawl around on the tummy to get this shot, so I don't understand why you're handing the "too hard work" baton to me! Sooo, I'm handing it back to you!!!

| June 28, 2010 @ 7:54am | Thanks, Trish. That name, Alexander rose, doesn't ring a bell, so I don't think this rose is that one. Glad this image brought back some memories for you.
