This was taken at the Olivine Beach area in Maui. The dog was waiting for some surfers to come in. The crosses were there because a honeymooning couple were washed out to sea at that spot.

An incredibly emotive and memorable image, Patiann. The dog looks for all the world as though he's waiting for 'the honeymooners'. The excellent composition adds to the drama. Very well seen and captured.

What a very sensitive image, patiann. Surely man/woman's best friend.

Hi Pattiann,

This image definitely elicits an emotional response. As that is one of the definitions of a successful image, you nailed it on that, especially for those of us who rank dogs right up there at the top of all sentient beings!!

Did you provide some external light for the crosses? The rocks and crosses appear to be much lighter that the rest of the image.

The only thing I might change is to bring out the dog just a bit more -- not so much as to look artificial, but just enough to lead the eye from the crosses out to the dog. I might tone down the rocks around the crosses just a bit also.

A very well executed concept.

Now, I'll find the tissues. Crying

Thank you for the comments and the wonderful tip for the dog! I'll give that a try. No added light for the crosses, but it was early in the day in September, so the light was low at that time. I tried it in black & white, but ended up liking the color better. Again Thank you!Grin

Patiann, wow! I do think the dog waits for not only that lost couple, but also all those others who have been washed out to sea, the world over.

This reminds me very much of the true story of The Waving Girl, Florence Martus, of Savannah. She'd fallen in love with a young sailor, who'd promised her he'd return for her. He got back on his ship - and altho she waited for him most of her life, he never returned.

Each day, she'd go down to the river and stand in a certain place with her dog and a lantern for night time and a blanket to wave high over her head. She greeted all the sailors on all the ships that steamed up and down the Savannah River - all her life, until she was not able to do so, due to her health. Now there's a statue to commemorate her service of welcoming and bidding farewell to all those myriads of sailors.

Hi Patiann,
The phrase, a picture is worth a thousand words seems to fit here.
I love this photograph.

Just catching up on my viewing here, and I find this. What a great juxtaposition of subjects to create a larger idea! I think Marti's suggestions were great. If you are open to more experimentation, Mark Johnson just had a recent posting on how to shrink the mid-ground, to bring the dog a little closer to the crosses. Might not work here because of the complexity of the rocks, but it could be fun to try.

Thank you for the suggestions. I moved rocks and darkened them as well. Undecided
