A calm morning means I can take pictures of, and in, the blooming Prickly Poppies. The flower itself has white tissue-paper petals that flutter and sway in the slightest breeze. Thus my thanks for a calm morning. A prickly leaf that gives the plant its name is visible below the flower in the lower right.

Canon 40D, lens Canon 100mm macro, f/9.0, 1/400sec, ISO 400, actual size about 3 inches diameter


The yellow pollen-laden stamens seem irresistible to several varieties of native bees (although I've never seen a honeybee visiting). They dive right into the forest of stamens, moving a bit like clownfish in the tentacles of anemones.

Fantastic images, Rick. That last green bee is so beautiful! I love your description of how the bees move in and out of the forest of stamens like clownfish among the anemones!

Beautiful images - and you were most fortunate to get calm winds. On the last one, the green insect just looks covered over with gold dust.
