I love the way you shoot the flower very much but don't you think the background competes with the flower? The background is wonderful by itself, same with the flower. Would blurring the background or darkening it be a good thing? Undecided

I think you are absolutely right, Micheline. I worked on the background a lot to make it less obvious but didn't quite go far enough. I am not sure I knew what I was doing at the time. I will go in, darken it some more and blur it to see if it is less of a distraction. Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

To my eye it is a lot better. What do you think about darkening the upper center bulb a little more? And what if you darken the two yellow green (almost lime) bulbs at the bottom left corner?

I will come back and see.

Wes, I received a Nikon 105mm Macro 1.4 or 1.8. I tried my new toy and discovered I have to work hard to get your quality of pictures. It is not granted I succeed. If I post pictures on this thread would you be kind enough to criticize my pictures?

I will continue to work on this image, Micheline. Maybe it will eventually become worthy of posting.

I will be glad to look at your images, Micheline. That lens is a great lens so have fun with it.

Now the flowers are the real subject of your picture. Bravo!
May I download the last version and crop it a little. It will be easier than telling you in English where I would crop it.

If you give me your permission to do it, I will download and post it tomorrow.

I am on a trip now in France. If I am not too shy I'll post my pictures.

Your picture was first beautiful (colors, light composition)
It was worthy to post it. After working on it you'll have 3 choices instead of one.

Please do have fun with the imagine, Micheline. I will be looking forward to seeing your ideas at work.

And, don't feel shy. I remember my first posts and the anxiety that I felt when I finally bit the bullet. Everyone here seems to be kind in their comments. I can only imagine that you images will be terrific.

Wes,
There is a darker background. Maybe I pushed the thing too far. Is it less luminous?

I have to say the original was quite interesting: the flower was in its own natural context. This version is more like a "portrait" of the hyacinth.
I'll try something with the original. See you tomorrow.

I think I have brighten the flower too much and lost détails and colours. Sorry. Do you think the darker parts are too dark?

I just darkened the background and did not change the flowers. If so, a tad.

Wes, tell me if there is one you prefer.

Hi, Micheline. I do like the darker background but with the less brightened blossoms, but, I love the split toned effect you got in the last one. Almost looks like gold plated flowers or an old fashioned still life that could be sitting in a palace somewhere.

Thanks for playing with this image. It is interesting just how our visions, as photographers, are so different. I love it all.

Wes,

It was fun playing with this image. I liked it alot.
Finallay I think I preferred your third image. Among the photos I did I prefer the split toning one.
Hope we'll play this game over again.
