n temples of Chinese chapter of Buddhism, it is said the if one writes his/ her wish on paper (or on sacred scrolls available in temples) and put it in this fire place then the smoke of burning paper will take these wishes to holly spirits.

Mohsin, thanks for the story. It's interesting how beliefs span centuries and cultures.

In the early days of this country here along the east coast, some people held what they called a "Burning or Lighting of the Holly." They would cut off small branches of the holly tree and build a fire, either outside or in their interior fireplaces around Christmas time. They'd make a wish and then toss the holly twig into the fire and imagine that their wish was carried heavenward by the flames and smoke. This tradition may have come over from England.
