Member challenge #5 Macro of your garden or a garden near youJuly 25, 2010 @ 12:15pm
OK here is the new challenge, Make an interesting macro or closeup of something in your garden or a garden near you, I know that some of us are in the middle of summer and others way down south are in the middle of winter don't worry your image doesn't have to be a flower or bug.

This will run for two weeks at which time I will pick the winner and that person will choose the new member assignment.

Please go out an make one or two new images for this assignment hopefully we all have a garden or green space within walking distance of where we live or work.

I have some vacation and a heavy work load over the next two weeks but will do my best to drop in and comment on each submission.

a couple of my recent images to get you started.

Thanks, Scott. Lovely example images. I'll have to look around with a sharp eye, lol.

I think I'd better submit a bee picture now before I'm tempted to enter a spider picture, and thus spoil this thread for some people Smile . I shot several pictures of this bee while it was involved in self-grooming, rubbing its legs all over its head and anterior thorax. After some of my recent shots, it was a relief to try to capture as large an animal as a honeybee....

Canon EOS 40D, lens Canon 100mm macro, ISO 400, f/16, 1/250 w/flash, distance ~9 inches, tripod, 2010-07-25

Rick and Trish - Great shots and very different takes on bees. Very nice, but I might need to keep some an epi-pen handy when reading this thread.

Scott - Sorry, I should have commented on your fine examples. I love the color triad in the ladybug shot. And the foliage shot is great. I have been trying to create a shot like that for a while with only limited success.

Rick excellent sharpness and a supper tight composition well done.

Trish I like this composition as well I personally like to include the flower or plant the bug is standing on in my images, I would suggest making sure your focus point is on the bee in this case and let the flower go out of focus as I believe the bee is your primary subject and should be the sharpest object in the frame.

Great start looking forward to more entries.

I created a new thread yesterday before I saw this member challenge -- somewhat new to this, sorry. Hopefully it's OK if I repost my image to submit for this challenge.

Rick, gotta love your macros. This is such a close-up of the bee it took me a moment to figure out what was what!

Trish, love the colors and the graceful curves of the flower stalk. Glad the bee sat still for you.

Tim, again, a great image. Of course it's fine if you post this here, too.

I agree with Flo that I really like Rick's bee close-up. It has a nice "C" curve to it that leads you right to the sharp eye.

Flo, I'm saving my pennies for that scanning electron microscope so I can make dust mites look like ankylosaurs. Wink

Trish, I have no doubt that your garden is much lusher with far more variety than mine. (Actually, I don't have a garden anymore since the city surveyed and found that the flowers (also cultivated by a previous owner) were actually on city land. Ripped them out and let the little plot go fallow. But I digress.) At any rate, I see your shot as being about the relation between bee and flower.

Tim, I'm glad to see your tomato composition show up on this thread. It's just such a perfect progression of ripeness.

And Scott has given us the choice between bold colors and intriguing B&W leaves. Very nice.

Rick, love the bumblebee. That's quite the close-up. Way to go.

Here are mine. Kind of difficult to find any flowers this time of year. These were out Saturday. Sadly, when I went to the post office yesterday, the passion flowers were gone.

Janet

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W.

Janet, I love your bumble bee on the cosmos or whatever it is. And passion flowers are so exotic, they are almost unbelievable. I love the purple with the pale yellow of the anthers (the pollen producers).

Tim - Nice shot. Makes me wish that I had some tomatoes growing in my garden.

Janet - These are both great. I agree with Flo about the passion flower - It kind of reminds me of a Portuguese Man-of-War.

Steve Lol at epi-pen but you could bee right!

Rick So sharp and so close too. Such a shame about your garden and a senseless waste too.

Tim perfect capture for this challenge. I love the smell of tomatoes growingand can't get enough of them

Smart bee Janet and colourful passion flower.

Steve what a great capture of the frog, could even fit the green challenge too. Sweet bud.

Faces In The GardenJuly 30, 2010 @ 2:13pm
The first image is for reference. The entire cluster of 18 flowers and buds, on a 24 inch stem, is less than 3 inches or 76mm across. The individual flowers average a little more than an inch or 28mm across. The faces, on each flower, average .08 of an inch or 2mm across.

The 2nd image is of the man's face on the left of the reference image. It's approximately 40mm across

The orchid is a hybrid of "Pacific Shangrila (El Rincon) x "Pacific Girl (Primavera) and has won an AM/AOS award. That's the only information that appears on the orchid tag.

I'm having a little trouble with saturation. The color on the reference image is OK, but the 2nd image is a little over cooked. I lowered it in PS, but had to increase in TME????? I'll work on it.

Thanks for taking a peek.

Billy Joe..

Aw, Steve, you mean I can't kiss you and turn you into Prince Charming? Grin I don't think I'd have noticed your reflection had you not mentioned it! It's a beautiful capture of the frog, tho.

Your flower is lovely, so nice and soft.

Billy Joe, again I must say that these are lovely and fascinating.

Wow some really nice work in here.

Tim tomatoes are my favorite garden fruit and you have done a nice job of capturing the progressing from green to ripe.

Janet wonderful bumble bee and cone flower shot Love the perspective giving you a nice clean background. Too bad about the passion flower maybe there will be more blooms next time you drop by.

Steve, super macro of the frog did you use a telepohoto lens for this image? I can't get that close with my macro lens.

Also a nice flower macro good backlight to bring out the glow of the flower.

Billy Joe. very nice I also like the angle you took on this macro of the orchid the colors look fine to me but I am not orchid expert.

Scott - Thanks. Actually, just a 100mm macro. I have a water feature in my yard and at least some of the frogs are pretty used to my coming and messing around with the garden and taking pictures.

Also, the flower was front/side lit. I used a trick of Tony Kuyper's which uses a couple of Gaussian blur layers to "spread" the light. It is very useful for landscapes, and this is the first time I ever tried it on a macro, but I like the effect.

Steve - "spread the light? Using Gaussian blurs? Hum. First time I've heard of this, guess it could work.

To lighten parts of an image or the whole image, sometimes I used a white layer; to darken, use a black layer.

I just found this current thread; they keep moving around.Smile

With Craig's blessing, perhaps post a link to each new member challenge in the "Site News" section?

There are inspiring images here, which make me re-consider exploring macro photography. It takes such incredible time, patience, and skill!

WOW! Prasanth, this is spectacular! Love the saturated colors, the details, the diagonal.

April and others, perhaps all that is needed when the choice is made by the current host is for that new person to add one more comment to this thread, stating where he/she will post the next member challenge.

Time is short today so just let me pick the winner I will try and give some additional details a bit later.

I picked RickT for the super sharp photo of the bee.

So Rick let us know which thread you are posting the next challenge in on the bottom of this challenge.

Great work everyone thanks for all the supportive comments along the way.

Scott.

We're in trouble now. You've picked one of the least creative among us and asked for a novel idea. I'll go cook dinner, have 2 glasses of wine, and then blame the lame idea on the alcohol. Undecided To be continued....
