At first, due to the very bright fuchsia color, I wanted those petals to be in sharp focus. But the more I look at this, the better I like the softness of the whole image. Thistles are very prickly plants and I don't like to go near them, but their flowers are very soft in comparison - and I think this image implies that difference.

I like this sharp thorns and a soft flower. What sort of lens were you using?

Thank you both for commenting. I liked the softness of the flower contrasting with the sharp thorns.

This was taken with an old bellows type lensbaby (which accounts for a lot of the blur) My technique in these shots is to lean in as close as possible to get a sharp focus then lean in some more and sort of pull the bellows OUT to get the macro effect.

It gives the impression of a little paint pot and a soft brush saturated with the pigment. Interesting soft take on a subject that usually is shot to emphasize the spikes.
