Macro ExperimentsJuly 28, 2010 @ 3:08pm
My shooting buddy, Diane, and I went to a park and nature center that was new to us a day or so ago. They have a wonderful flower garden that was in full bloom.

Now since I do not have a true macro lens, I've been trying to see what I can come up with as a substitute. This time I had with me a 2 and a half inch (about 6 and a half centimeters) plastic dome magnifier. I held it in front of a 24mm Nikkor lens mounted on the Nikon D300 body.

The Magnifier:

Holding it in front of the lens:

To take this picture, tho, I had to hold the magnifier up to the lens while holding another camera in my right hand. In actual field work, however, my right hand held the camera while my left hand reached around to the front of the lens with the magnifier.

Trying to hold the magnifier so the sun didn't fall on it, while getting side- or back-lit flowers and hand-holding the camera - and coping with the darned breeze - proved difficult. A tripod here would have proved impractical, due to the way the garden is set up.

So I set the camera for continuous shooting and made several-to-many images of each flower while slowing moving the camera set-up in and out, once I thought I had a fairly good focus.

The focus, however, will never be tack sharp using this magnifier. But I like the soft and distorted results. Here are the 3 best images out of about 50-60. I know some of you will think these are perfectly terrible, since they are not in sharp focus. That's OK, I understand.

A couple of small girardia-type flowers:

An ornamental honeysuckle cluster:

A large pink composite flower:

I really do want to get a good macro lens some day! Wish I'd never traded in the old Sigma 90mm macro I used to take gorgeous macros with. But it was old and sticking, slow to find the focus in close-ups, etc. I guess I could have had it rebuilt or refurbished.

I'd appreciate comments.

I love viewing the world in alternative ways, without drugs Wink . This equipment variation strikes me as one way you've brought out a feeling of movement and dance in flowers -- especially in images 1 and 2.

Flo,
I love these. The remind me of the look from a lensbaby -- which I don't have but wish I did. I have a 100mm macro lens, but have found lately that I prefer using my 70-200 zoom with extension tubes. Yea, I can't focus to infinity, but I think the close up images come out sharper.

Thanks, Tim. But I don't even have the zoom. LOL.

I like them all; but the last one is my favorite. The colors in them are rich and vibrant. The focus is unique yet doesn't detract from the subjects. They are quite simply dreamy. Thumbs up.

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W.

They are all soft dreamy and colourful. The second is the one for me. Agree with Tim about the lensbaby look.

Thanks, Graham. I sometimes have to laugh at myself. Here I am with "expensive" glass and camera body, and then go put some $2 plastic gizmo in front of it, lol. The Nikon people must be groaning big time!

For some photographers, lenses have become so sharp that they are swinging pendulum the other direction. Hence the revival of pin holes, zone plates, and Holgas and other "toy cameras." i guess Lensbaby could be put here, too.

Fun effect certainly worth exploring more.
