"Kristina - Lens Flare" by Bryan Allen

Posted: February 18th, 2009 @ 6:56pm

In this Art of Lighting video tutorial Bryan Allen walks you through an in studio portrait which takes advantage of lens flare as an element of visual design. Lens flare, which can be very loosely defined as scattering and internal reflections of light within the mechanism of the lens itself, is typically considered to be an image flaw and something that we work to control or eliminate. When we have dramatic flare from a point source of light we can end up with a patterned series of repeating rings or circles of light that move across the image on a line (typically more dramatic when we shoot with zoom lenses which have more elements which means more reflections and potentially more dramatic flare). Bryan walks you through a simple lighting set up that will help you create flare and work with it as part of the appeal or design of your final shot.
