A gorgeous series, Michael. Is it spring already where you are? These images sure make me feel like spring is in the air.

I must agree with Wes here. It is a nice series.
The black and white treatment in the first image works beautifully at highlighting the rim lighting around the buds and stems. I can almost feel the fine hairs! I relly like the left half of the image; the soft translucence of the petals with rim lighting bringing me down the stem to the buds. The right side gets a little busy, and I don't know where to look, but again the rim lighting direct the eye back up to the blooms.

The second image is a good rendition, and I like that you took the time to clean up the lower left. I would love to see more detail in the shadows, as I feel there is more to see than what you are showing us!

The color version is beautiful, and I see you left the lower left alone. That pulls my eye away from the subject and I'd love to see it cleaned as in the B&W version.

Here, I see the detail in the shadows that the black and white version is missing, and I can explore the entire subject!Smile I SOOOOOO wish that the small thin petal wasn't there so I could see all the filaments!

It is definitely a nice series! Good eye!

PPY-definitely!

My fav is the color version and thank you for including it. I feel like I'm watching the spring dance of the star magnolias. The petals just swing in wild abandon as the flower has finally freed itself from its winter confinement. The flower is doing what I'd love to be doing right now!

Wes, The nice thing about Sunnyvale is we get mild winter and most of the year round it is sunny. Although I'd say this year it was cold last month. I can walk my neighborhood and see roses blooming too.

Greg, I will played around with the first image by trimming the right side and the balance seem to be off. These are flowers way up in the tree and I had to shoot it through a bunch of other closer buds outside the DOF. I tried shooting a bunch of these buds showing the hairy rims but the shallow DOF just did not give me the sharpness and the desired effect.

I lightened the 2nd image to give you more details in the shade. Initially, I was trying to keep the focus on the hairy edge on the rim without blowing the translucent petals. I think this is better. Thanks for the feedback.

I know what you mean about exposing the filament. I had to deal with the wind too. I like the way the petals flow with the wind.

Flo, Go right ahead and swing in wild abandonment to welcome the sun and early spring. The wind posses a challenge especially close to noon time when I took this shot. Thanks for the feedback.

Flo, I am so envious that you know the names of the flowers people post here! Unfortunately, I am such that I have a hard time keeping silk flowers alive, let alone named!

Michael..This B&W version, IMO is better. I like that I can see the shadow detail, and you did well to keep the highlights from clipping.

Might I ask that in the future, you add a different version in a new post rather than replace it in the original? Doing that would be so helpful in comparing the images and seeing what you have done.Smile

And I must add... knowing now that you captured these on a windy day, I congratulate you on choosing a shutter speed fast enough to freeze these blooms in perfect focus! Well done!

Greg, Advice taken. I placed the old pictures back and moved the new versions on the new post. This was taken around noon where the light was bright so using a smaller aperture and fast shutter speed was easy.

I like you I am not as good with names of flowers or birds. Flo is the resident botanist.
