Dark Skies and the Milky WayOctober 19, 2009 @ 9:41am
I spent last weekend on a ranch deep in the Texas hill country. The weather was clear and the moon was new.

24mm, 25 sec., f/1.8, ISO 6400

The greenish light was from an aerial light near our cabin. The yellowish glow on the horizon is from the distant lights of a small town or maybe a ranch.

The white streak in the upper left could possibly be a plane, but at 100% I cannot see the usual dot-pattern that results from blinking lights typically seen on planes. It might very well be a meteor, but I was not looking at the sky during the exposure, so I really don't know.

The white, fuzzy glow (middle right) looks like a galaxy. I'm not sure which one, perhaps Andromeda (M31)? This shot is looking roughly NNE about 2 hours after sunset.

24mm, 25 sec., f/1.8, ISO 3200

It's kind of hard to see in this small web-sized pic, but the trunk of the tree has a bluish glow. I inadvertently light-painted it with my LED headlamp.

I set this shot up and hit the shutter, then turned my back to the camera and paced around a bit (while talking to my wife on the cell). All the while I had the lamp on. I was careful not to look in the direction of the shot, but the light reflected off the ground, then off the tree, and was recorded by the camera. It's just that sensitive!

I love these TJ and look forward to getting some pointers from you on the Grand bend workshop. We should get some great opportunities to shoot the night sky in that location.

I particularly enjoy that first image. High Lonesome. Great shot.

Thanks, Mike. Yeh, if the weather cooperates and we have clear skies at night, then you're going to see stars like never before Grin I think we need to have a workshop session on just star photography.

TJ, these are wonderful. I can really see that ghostly blue on the tree trunk, too. Wish I could go on this Big Bend workshop - sounds like you all will make a great group!

Oh, wow! These are both fantastic.

The concept behind #1 is a delight, and the juxtaposed textures/lines in #2 are so very strong.

Wonderful compositions in each. Different, and very fun!

If you could solarize/invert the color of just the tree in the 2nd image - then it might look like a big lightning strike! It'd be yellow.

Your night shots continue to be quite fun to look at TJ. Can't wait to get to a part of the country where some of these shots are available.

Thanks, Wes! Glad to see you posting. Yep, you'll get a chance to see dark skies like this in Big Bend. Do you still have your D3? It will do very high ISO well, and is perfect for this type of photography.

These are stunning shots. I especially appreciate you posting the data. Someday I'm going to be inspired to try this; and your data will help.

Janet

Go ahead and play with the images. I would ask that when you post them on other sites (such as Flikr, Photobucket, etc.) that you credit my photography. I would do the same for you! Other than that, I'm E Z T D B W.

There's not much to itSmile I'm currently writing a tutorial for these type of shots. I hoping to get it done in a few weeks. I'll post it here.

WOW! My favorite is the second shot - it's a stunner! Looking forward to Big Bend - I'll prepare myself for some sleepless nights for these kind of shots!

Thanks! Sunset will be about 6pm during our workshop, and it will be sufficiently dark about 7:30pm. A good hour to 1.5 hours shooting time is enough to get a dozen or more shots like this. I'm looking forward to it!
