OR, had you not told us, this looks very much like a layered sandstone formation. Great catch - just the right light to bring out the edges that the water left behind.

Good eye. I would consider cloning out the white lump near the bottom middle and the dark circles upper right to finish off this image.

Well seen! A wonderful impression of a layered mountain range. It reminds me of oriental ink paintings, but with a texture they lack.

I think it would be fun to play with some more. Obviously, cloning out the white fleck and healing the dark spots. But then, I wonder what would happen if you introduced some graduated darkening into the receding regions?

Maybe then it would look too contrived, but might be worth a try.

I did play around a little but as you say it became contrived or painted. I really didn't know how to improve on the effect. But all are welcome to try.
