Trying a New-to-Me ProcedureJuly 15, 2010 @ 9:24am
Trying to improve an image I'd made of my great grandson Connor last month.

1. I always store my original images in Apple's iPhoto. To work on an image, I drag the original to the desktop, then open PS's Bridge and click on the image icon on the desktop shown in Bridge. Then I open the image in ACR (Camera Raw).

2. I did the above step, but immediately opened the image in PS CS3 and flattened it.

3. Went back to Bridge and opened the original in ACR. I got a duplicate, which is what I was hoping would happen. In ACR, the only change I made was to move the Clarity slider all the way to the left. Then I opened that into CS3.

4. I dragged the dupe image over the flattened original.

5. I created a black mask and used a wide white brush at about 32% opacity and painted only Connor's face several times.

6. Changed the blend mode to Screen. This produced an image with Connor's face too bright. So I changed the opacity to about 53% which tamed down his face to where I liked it.

What I liked about the result is more light on his face. But I think I lost some of the warm skin tones in the process.

Question 1: Do you think I improved the original?

Question 2: Is there something else I can do to improve this result?

Question 3: What would you do with the original?

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Flo,

I really like the way that the boy is framed. Actually, I like #1 better than the others. He may "pop" a bit if you make a selective color adjustment layer and add some cyan and black to the yellow channel. Or, not. very nice the way that it is.

I too like #1, Flo. It is amazing how fast children grow!

Thanks, Bob sand Becky. Guess I should have left well enough alone, then.

Hi Flo!
My first impression (besides Connor is a good looking kid) is the technique is better suited to glamor photography that a gritty baseball player..... HA!

The washed out baseball hat bothered me so I tried to fix that, and then decided to crop and add some texture (working with the gritty baseball player theme). Anyway, I am not a portrait photographer and here is my best shot:

Paul, thank you for diddling with the image. I like what you did very much. You're right about "gritty baseball players" vs glamor shots, lol.

Trish, thanks for your comments.
