| Mt Rainier, keep or toss | July 18, 2010 @ 12:55am | This is one of many that I shoot that looks way better in person than after I take the shot and get home. The color version is blah, so I tried a B&W.
Probably still blah, but I would like an opinion please.
Mt Rainier from a logging road.

I am not sure what is wrong, other than no defined subject, no good foreground, wish there were some clouds, etc.
If you have a comment, please let me know, good or bad. I need help.
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions. I added two new versions here, so they can be compared with the original. I increased the contrast, did a little cloning, and cropped square and a little more pano.

| July 18, 2010 @ 7:46am | Ron, I would not toss this. I think this is one of those images that might become important to you after you let it lie low for a while. Seems to me like the mountain itself is the subject in this image and I do like the way the dirt road leads the viewer into the image and towards the subject. Clouds would possibly help so grab some from another shot and place them into this sky. I like it.

| July 18, 2010 @ 7:58am | Hi, Ron - I can understand why you wanted to make an image from this location. The foreground shadow indicates that the sun was to your right, and therefore those trees and bushes should have side rim light on them, but that doesn't show here. It looks more like the sun was behind you and therefore the lighting was "flat."
You might submit this to the Daily Critique. Craig might like it enough to show what you can do to liven it up.

| July 18, 2010 @ 7:07pm | | How about re-scaling the image to create a panoramic framing? i would do the re-scaling selectively so that the mountain peak is off-center. also, clone out the fallen tree-trunk as it is very distracting. finally, i would push the whites and blacks a little more. as of now, the image lacks a bit of tonal depth. |

I posted two new versions, using the comments you all made. They are in the original post so it is easier to compare with the original.
More contrast (perhaps a bit overdone now), some cloning, and two crops, square and pano.

| July 19, 2010 @ 2:51pm | I like the last image best of all. But some might like the one above it better. I like both better than the original. I think with the last 2, it comes down to a matter of personal taste.

| July 21, 2010 @ 10:42am | Hate to be odd man out but I like the first best by far. Though some clouds would be nice, there weren't any there! And maybe the sun could have shown something up a bit different, but it didn't. But overall, I like it best. Love the composition. Rather than fix what you have, I'd go back several time's looking for the clouds and better light.
There's a very old house here in town that I have posted and I've taken a lot of photo's of it and it was always ok but never inspireing. Finaly caught everything right one day and no ammount of post prosessing could make it better. Same with my panoramic of The Taylor Ranch. Always knew there was something there and kept going back. Finaally it exposed itself.
I'd keep going back looking for just the right time, it will be there if you wait.

I pity the man never loved by a dog!
